DOSSEN AND MYERS WIN BRONZE AT EURO YOUTHS

Gabriel Dossen was edged out on a 3-2 split decision in the semi-finals of the European Youth Championships in Antalya, Turkey today.

The Galway welter lost 29-28,29-28,29-28 – 28-29,27-30, with one judge giving the Irish champion all three rounds versus England’s Mark Dickenson.

The English corner decided to up the tempo and bring the fight to Dossen to take the stylish Irish southpaw out of his comfort zone and the tactics ultimately worked on three of the judges’ cards.

Dickenson poured forward at every opportunity, but most of the cleaner shots and work came from Dossen in all three rounds. However, a majority of judges rewarded aggression.

Earlier, Jordan Myers lost his 75kg semi-final bout in Antalya.

The Sligo middleweight, the 2013 European Schoolboy champion, was beaten by Russia’s Danile Teterev, the 2016 European Junior champion, on a unanimous decision.

Myers, as always, let absolutely everything in the ring this afternoon in a see-saw bout in which plenty of leather was exchanged between two evenly matched opponents.

Final scores 30-27,30-27,30-27, 29-29, 29-28 to Teterev.

Today’s results bring Ireland’s competitive interest in the tournament to an end. Myers and Dossen, who won three fights each en route to the last-four, will be presented with their bronze medals tomorrow.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1).
