Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan each earned a quota place for the Rio 2016 Olympics through the World Series of Boxing (WSB) after winning their last outings of the WSB regular season in Maiquetia, Venezuela last night.
Barnes beat Venezuelan Finol Rivas in the light-fly class on a split decision and Conlan followed that up with a unanimous decision over Jose Diaz in the bantam class at the Estadio Polideportivo venue.
Barnes and Conlan were competing for leading WSB side Italia Thunder in Venezuela. Barnes has won seven out of seven for the Italian side this season to finish top of the 49kg table with 34 points, one point less than a maximum return, and Conlan has won five of his seven fights for the Azzurri to finish in second spot in the 56kg table on 26 points, one point ahead of Cuba’s Andy Gomez-Cruz.
Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin finished in pole position in the bantamweight table.
