Women secure 3 medals for Ireland at European Junior Championships

Ireland will return from the European Junior Championship with a minimum of 3 medals, following today’s women’s quarter finals.

57kg Kayleigh Byrne boxed her quarter final against home boxer Asija Turkovic. Kayleigh was assured and in control throughout the bout, which ended in a 5-0 decision in the Gorey boxer’s favour. She has won through to the semi-finals on a score line of 28:29; 28:29; 27:30; 28:29; 28:29.

63kg Kaysie Joyce boxed Croatia’s Agata Stajcer, and, despite being behind going in to the last round, forced two standing counts, and came away with the 3-0 decision. Judges scored the bout 29:28; 27:29; 28:28; 27:29; 28:29.

66kg Cassie Henderson made her tournament debut in style against Laura Wanda Szydlowska of Poland. Cassie was the dominant boxer throughout the bout, and has booked a place in the semi-finals with a UD. Judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 28:29.

50kg Paige Nickels returned for her second bout of the tournament, at quarter finals stage. She boxed Turkey’s Kubra Cicek – the bout was a 5-0 decision in favour of the Turkish boxer. Judges scored the bout 27:29; 27:29; 27:29; 27:29; 27:29.

In Bout 4 of Ring B’s Afternoon Session, 48kg Isabel Nolan contested her quarter final. She meets Russia’s Kseniia Vishnevskaia. This was a hotly contested bout, and the 4-1 decision went to the Russian boxer. Judges scored the bout 30:26; 30:27; 30:27; 28:29; 30: 27.

46kg Abby Molloy, having won her opening bout, contested today against England’s Lily Bassett. Abby gave her all, but the 5-0 decision went to the English boxer, on a score line of 30:26; 30:26; 30:26; 30:26; 30:26. 75kg Carly Norris contested her first bout of the championships against Russia’s Daria Antipova, and the referee called time in the first round. 70kg Chloe Poleon made her tournament debut against Sara Scorrano of Italy. Chloe battled bravely throughout, but the bout was subject to an RSC3, in favour of the Italian athlete. 80kg Alanna Kenny took on Russia’s Anna Buzuleva. Alanna contested strongly, but came out the wrong side of a 4-1 split decision. Judges scored the bout 29:28; 29:28; 28:29; 29:28; 30:27.

370 boxers are contesting the championships. 28 federations, in all, are competing at the tournament: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.

IABA last contested this tournament in 2022 and returned with a massive haul of ten medals: 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze. Ava Henry (Docklands) and Tadhg O’Donnell (Four Kings) claimed gold; silvers were won by Grace Conway Dowling (Tredagh), Niamh Keogh (Olympic L), Mary McDonagh (Sliabh Luachra) and Jamie Collins (Drimnagh). Bronze medalists were Alfie Jordan (Olympic L), John Harty (Portlaoise), Cillian Reilly Lennon (Jobstown) and Sophie Curley Gray (Dealgan).

Thursday is men’s quarter finals day, and 6 boxers are contesting for podium places.

50kg Kalib Walsh takes on Scotland’s Aaron Sarwar in Bout 3 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session. In Ring B’s Bout 10, 66kg John Donoghue will box William Joseph Loveridge.

In Ring B’s Evening Session, 48kg Michael O’Reilly takes on Azerbaijan’s Nihat Gasimov. In the subsequent bout, 52kg Eddie Corcoran boxes Greece’s Nearchos-Petros Konstantinoudis. Also meeting Greek opposition is 63kg Edward Harty – taking on Angelos Pangiotis Kalamaris in bout 8

In Bout 11 of Ring A’s Evening Session, 80kg John Mongans contests against Tobias FP Taylor.
