2 Last 16 Wins For Team Ireland At The Women’s World Championships.

2 more Team Ireland boxers booked their places in the Quarter Finals of the Women’s World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey, today.

Amy Broadhurst, contesting at 63kg, Aslahan Sezgin Mehmedova, was dominant from the first bell, and came away with a unanimous win. The judges scores: 30:24, 30:26, 30:27, 30:26, 30:26

At 52kg, Carly McNaul won through to her Quarter Final following a strongly contested bout against reigning European U22 champion, Nikolina Cacic of Croatia. The judges scored the bout 26:30, 27:29
28:28, 27:29, 27:29 in favour of the boxer in blue.

54kg Niamh Fay met strong opposition in Romania’s Lacramioara Perijoc. This was a close, testy bout, and the Dubliner lost out by the narrowest of margins, a 3-2 split. The judges scored the bout: 29:27, 28:28, 27:29, 28:28, 29:27

Caitlin Fryers, at 50kg, boxed Italy’s Giordana Sorrentino and came out the wrong side of a unanimous decision, with the judges scoring the bout 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 26:30, 26:30

The final Irish boxer in the ring in Istanbul this evening was 66kg Kaci Rock, who met Anna Lysenko of Ukraine. The judges scored the bout 26:30, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29, 27:30 in favour of the Ukrainian boxer.

Four Team Ireland boxers are in Quarter Final action on Monday.

Olympian, Michaela Walsh (57kg) will box out of the blue corner when she meets Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova in bout 5 of Ring A’s afternoon session. 2 bouts later, in bout 7, Amy Broadhurst (63kg) vies for a semi-final berth against Serbia’s Jelena Janicijevic. 70kg Lisa O’Rourke, in red, will contest against Armenia’s Ani Hovsepyan bout 10 in the same ring and session.

52kg Carly McNaul is in action in bout 3 of Ring B’s afternoon session, against Brazil’s Carolina De Almeida.

Tuesday May 17th will be a rest day, and finals will be boxed across Thursday May 18th and Friday May 19th.

In order to be entitled to receive the Prize Money, the IBA says the” Boxer must win at least one bout at the Competition and reach place from 1st to 3rd (gold to bronze medal)”.
