Dublin, Wednesday 28th September, the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (“IABA”) has been made aware that two members of the Irish Olympic Boxing Team, Steven Donnelly and Michael Conlan have been reprimanded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for violating Rules relating to gambling set out in the Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of Manipulation of Competitions.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) were satisfied that there was no intent to manipulate any event and both of the Irish boxers are obliged to follow and contribute to various integrity educational programmes as part of the reprimand.

Athletes participating in the Olympic Games, are prohibited from any form of gambling. This is set out in the OCI’s Conditions of Participation signed by all participating Irish athletes in the Olympic Games.

The IABA is very disappointed to learn that two members of the Irish Boxing team have engaged in such activity during the Rio Olympic Games. We fully endorse and support today’s ruling by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is likely no further action will be taken by the IABA as the matter has already been dealt with by the IOC.
