Ireland claim 3 bronze medals at FISU World Cup of Combat Sports & Adamus seeks gold up-grade.

57kg Patryk Adamus, of National College of Ireland and Drimnagh BC, makes history today by becoming the first ever Irish Third-Level student to box in a FISU final.

The World Cup includes 6 sports: Boxing, Karate, Muaythai, Sambo, Wrestling and Wushu. It takes place in Samsun, Turkey, from September 21st to 30th. The cup embraces a university-versus-university format instead of national delegations. The tournament ‘s website is here.

The Cup is a biannual event organised by FISU, the International University Sports Federation, of which Ireland has been a member since 1987.

Patryk won through to today’s final against Turkey following his semi final last night against a rugged Ukrainian boxer. He won the first round convincingly despite getting a cut over his eye following a clash of heads. Despite this distraction, the NCI student continued landing stinging punches in the second but heads clashed on numerous occasions leading to the doctor being called to assess. Eventually the doctor stopped the bout which the referee deemed to come from another accidental clash and with Adamus streaming ahead on the scorecards, he was awarded a unanimous decision. Following the bout, he was taken to the hospital where they put paper stitches on as the cut wasn’t too deep or too dangerous. on Wednesday, his quarter final opponent was disqualified following three warnings for holding in the bout.

On Wednesday, Leanne Murphy from Togher in Cork and a student on UL lost against the French champion in the 66KG quarter final. Despite a gallant effort, the Limerick student couldn’t find the punches to trouble her much more experienced opponent. This is Leanne’s first elite level international championship.

Aoibhe Carabine from Bangor Erris in Mayo and ATU Galway, lost her semi final to a top quality Turkish opponent despite leaving it all in the ring on terms of performance.  She will return home with her bronze medal from her quarter final win.

Matthew McCole won his quarter final on a 4-0 scoreline to claim bronze on Wednesday but in the process, he suffered a cut to his head which required hospital treatment meaning he couldn’t box in his semi final on Thursday night. Three wins in Samsun Turkey  for him was a good championship.

Darren O’Connor from Loughrea and representing University of Galway, was beaten in his semi final by a former world youth champion and seven times French champion. He too goes home with a bronze medal and got three bouts, two wins, one stoppage and an immense amount of experience as this too was his first ever elite level international championship.
