IRELAND FINISH IN TOP 10 AT EURO U/22s

Ireland, courtesy of Amy Broadhurst’s gold medal, finished in 9th spot in the medals table and 10th place in the rankings table at the 34-nation European U/22 Championships in Russia.

Broadhurst, who celebrates her birthday today as does flyweight Niamh Earley, claimed 60kg gold this afternoon after beating Italy’s Rebecca Nicoli in the lightweight final on St Patrick’s Day.

Ireland used a ten-strong squad at the 4th edition of the competition.

Four members of the squad, Irish male and female captains Gabriel Dossen and Aoife O’Rourke, Paddy Donovan and David Oliver Joyce were beaten by the eventual champions (all Russian) – Aleksei Semykin, Vakhid Abbasov, Beslan Khamzaev and Anastasiya Shamonova.

Russia topped the medals and rankings tables after winning 12 gold, 2 silver and a bronze. The host nation dominated the tournament and claimed more titles than all other nations combined.

Broadhurst, who boxes out of the Dealgan BC, has never been beaten at the European U22s and is now a two-time champion at this level.

Ireland’s Stephen Kelly was also between the ropes in Russia as he officiated at 56 bouts – 9 as a ref and 47 as a judge – in Vladikavkaz.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home at 9.10pm on Monday evening via Dublin Airport (Aeroflot).
