Cork’s Katie O’Keefe and Kildare’s Esther Lambe guaranteed themselves successive medals at the European Schoolboy/girl Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The Rebel and Thoroughbred County pair, both bronze medallists at the 2018 edition of the tournament, assured themselves of at least another pair of bronze medals after registering well-earned unanimous verdicts over Jocelyn Kilkenny of England and Italy’s Miria Rossetti this afternoon.

Sean Tyndall, Carleigh Irving, Nora Jackman and Thomas Ward also bagged bronze – at least – after posting impressive decisions.

Tuesday’s victories ensures that Ireland will be taking home 14 medals from Tbilisi, with another 11 Irish boxers in action in the last eight tomorrow.

Breanna Tobin, Lee McEvoy, Niamh Keogh, Bernard Cawley and Danny O’Brien lost out in their bids to reach the semi-finals today.

“All of our team boxed incredibly well today and that includes the boxers that lost in very close fights. We saw some brilliant performances from the Irish team,” said Stephen Connolly who is Irish team manager with Jennifer O’Sullivan in Georgia.

The remaining quarter-finals will be decided tomorrow with the semi-finals pencilled in for Friday. The finals will be decided on Saturday and Sunday.
