DONNELLY AND IRVINE BOW OUT IN RIO

Steven Donnelly in action in Rio

Steven Donnelly (blue) in action in Rio in an earlier bout..

Stephen Donnelly and Brendan Irvine bowed out of the Olympic Games in Rio today.

Ballymena BC welter Donnelly lost to Morocco’s current World Elite champion Muhammad Rabii in a top class 69kg quarter-final.

The heavy-handed North African, who is now guaranteed at least bronze, had his hand raised in victory on a split decision.

Donnelly took two standing counts in the last round – once after a clash of heads and the other after tripping over his own foot?

Rabii received a public warning after the clash of heads – from which Donnelly got the first count? – in an otherwise clean and open contest.

The Moroccan did most of his good work in the closer exchanges.Donnelly, switching stances throughout and finding the target regularly in the opening round, can consider himself unlucky to have gone back to his corner with all three judges scoring the opening three minutes 10-9 against him.

Rabbi, who qualified twice for Rio, had an improved second.Closing down space and upping his intensity, the World Series of Boxing (WSB) champion’s work was the more accurate, but one judge went with Donnelly, who finished the round with a flourish.

With Rabbi leading 20-18 and two cards and the bout tied 19-19 on the other,Donnelly needed a stoppage in the last stanza, a frame featuring some bewildering calls by the third man in the ring who had otherwise excelled at staying out of the way and letting both of them at it.

Donnelly did detonate some big lefts going down the final stretch, but Casablanca-native Rabbi, always solid on his feet and mostly shuffling forward, soaked up anything his opponent threw at him and responded with big shots off both hands to seal victory and a place in the last-four.

“He’s world champion, I knew coming in. I always believed in myself coming in here and you could see that in my performance, said Donnelly, who qualified through the WSB and who won two of his three fights over the last six days in Rio.

“”I gave it my all. The count he (ref) gave me in the last round, I actually tripped over my foot. That maybe swung the momentum his way. I’m proud of my efforts here. I’m disappointed not to get the medal and bring it home.

“But I’m happy enough and I’m proud of myself nonetheless. I’ve lifted the spirits (of the Irish squad) twice, but unfortunately I couldn’t do it again today.”

Brendan Irvine (blue) in action today

Earlier,Brendan Irvine lost at the last 32 stage. The St Paul’s BC ace, making his Olympic debut, was beaten by Shakhobidin Zoirov.

The Uzbek southpaw impressed en route to a unanimous decision.Zoirov flashed home a left in the opening seconds of today’s flyweight battle and never really looked back from that punch on.

Irvine had his moments in all three rounds, but most times he got through his aggressive opponent replied with swift three and four-punch combos.

Meanwhile, World and European Elite bantamweight champion Michael Conlan meets Armenia’s Aram Avagyan for a place in the quarter-finals at approximately 3.30pm (Irish time) tomorrow.

Thailand’s Chatchai Butdee and Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin clash in the corresponding bout.

Boxing2016 – Rio2016 Olympic Games Day8 Schedule

Donnelly, who has won two bouts so far at his first Olympiad, meets Morocco’s current AIBA World Elite welterweight champion Mohammed Rabii for a place in the semi-finals and a guaranteed bronze medal.

Rabbi, a Casablanca-born orthodox, enjoyed an excellent 2015, winning a World Elite title in Doha, Qatar, an African Confederation gold medal in his hometown and six World Series of Boxing (WSB) fights on the bounce.

He initially qualified for Rio courtesy of his performances in WSB, and then made the qualification standard again by virtue of winning AIBA World gold in the Persian Gulf.

However,he has not been so prolific in 2016 as he dropped a unanimous decision to Paul Kroll of the USA in the WSB and was beaten in the semi-finals of the Chemistry Cup by Germany’s Araik Marutjan in Germany.

Uzbekistan’s Giyasav Shakhram and Cuba’s Roniel Iglesias meet in the corresponding quarter-final.

Irvine,at 20 the youngest member of the Irish squad, makes his Olympic debut versus Shakhobidin Zoirov in the 52kg class.

The Uzbek flyweight booked a Rio ticket after winning four fights and gold at the Asia and Oceania qualifiers in China earlier this year. A 23-year-old southpaw, he’s won two Asian Confederation silver medals and gold at last year’s Strandja multi-nations.

He finished in 11th spot at the 2015 AIBA World Championships in Doha, Qatar, six places adrift of Irvine who boxes out of the St Paul’s BC.

Zoirov holds one victory over an Irish fighter after narrowly decisioning Evan Metcalfe in the 2010 Agalarov Youth Memorial in Azerbaijan.

Brendan Irvine in action

Julio Neto, who received one of the five host places reserved for Brazilian male boxers for Rio, and Antonio Vargas of the USA go head-to-head in the corresponding bout.

Michael Conlan and Katie Taylor, both No. 1 seeds in their respective weights, are between the ropes on Sunday and Monday in Rio,with Taylor renewing acquaintances with Finland’s Mira Potkonen, who she has beaten five times,in the last-eight with at least a bronze medal up for grabs.

Irvine and Donnelly will be aiming to join the Olympic champion in Monday’s mix from bouts No. 152 and 156 on this afternoon’s card.

A Donnelly victory will improve Irish boxing’s Olympic haul since Paris 1924 to 17 medals. The Ballymena BC man intends to leave absolutely everything in the ring at the 9,000 capacity Pavilion 6 venue.

“He’s world champion for a reason but I just want to give it my all,100%.Then I’ll be happy.I’m full of confidence now,” he said.

Eddie Bolger, who is working Ireland’s corner with head coach Zaur Antia and John Conlan at the 31st Olympiad, believes that no boxer is invincible.

“You always get 100% from Steven. Everybody’s beatable, especially here.”

TEAM IRELAND GEAR UP FOR BIG WEEKEND IN RIO

Steven Donnelly finds the target in Rio

Steven Donnelly finds the target in Rio

No Irish boxer will be in action at the Rio Olympic today, but Steven Donnelly, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan and Katie Taylor are between the ropes over the weekend and on Monday in a crucial three days.

(Click on names for individual schedules).

Donnelly meets Morocco’s current World Elite champion Mohammed Rabii tomorrow. Both men qualified for Rio through the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

However, Casablanca-native Rabii made the standard again at the World Elites in Qatar last year after winning gold, in an almost identical route to Conlan who first qualified through the WSB and then again after claiming bantamweight gold on the Arabian Peninsula.

If Donnelly, who got his country off to a winning start last Sunday and who picked Irish boxing off the ropes with a massive victory yesterday, wins tomorrow he will be guaranteed at least bronze.

The Ballymena BC welter will put everything on the line against the No. 1 seed.

He said: “He’s a classy operator and he’s not the world champion for nothing but I believe in myself and I’m going to give it everything. I’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

European Games silver medallist Irvine, meanwhile, makes his Olympic debut tomorow versus Uzbek southpaw Shakhobidin Zoirov for a place in the last 16. Zoirov booked a Rio ticket after claiming gold at the Asia and Oceania qualifiers in China earlier this year.

Conlan, the current AIBA World and European Elite bantamweight champion, faces Armenia’s Aram Avagyan for a place in the last-eight on Saturday. Conlan and Taylor are both seeded number 1 in their respective weights at the 31st Olympiad.

Taylor, the current Olympic champion, awaits the winner of today’s showdown between Finland’s Mira Potoken, who she has beaten five times in the past, and Brazil’s London 2012 bronze medallist Adriana Araujo, who qualified after accepting the one host place reserved for females in the lightweight category.

Taylor beat Araujo 20-5 en route to gold at the 2010 World Elite Women’s Championships in Barbados under the old computer scoring system.

Taylor actually took a standing count in error in that bout, as it was Araujo who was wobbled and not the Wicklow orthodox.

If the Bray woman, who received a bye into the quarter-finals, has her hand raised in victory in Monday’s quarter final she will be assured of a least bronze and her second successive Olympic medal.

Potkonen and Araujo go head-to-head at approximately 3;30pm (Irish time) today.
