Boxing2016 – EUBC European Confederation Junior Boxing Championships Day5 Schedule

 

Ireland will be taking home at least four bronze medals from the European Junior Championships in Kaposvar, Hungary.

Terry Donoghue, Martin McDonagh, Edward Donovan and Jack Conroy claimed impressive quarter finals wins today and will be aiming to upgrade their guaranteed bronze to at least silver in Friday’s semi-finals.

Brandon McCarthy, Kane Tucker and Adam Dempsey were also in action today. All three boxers gave fine accounts of themselves against Russian opponents, with McCarthy, who had an excellent three rounds, on the wrong end of a split decision and Tucker and Dempsey losing on unanimous decisions despite big displays.

Irish team manager Peter Brady hailed the performances of all seven Irish athletes in today’s quarter-finals.

Thirty four nations are competing in Hungary.

The semi-finals and finals will be held on Friday and Saturday. Team Ireland are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport on Sunday evening.

Boxing2016 – EUBC European Confederation Junior Boxing Championships Day4 Schedule

Seven Irish boxers will battle it out for at least bronze at the European Junior Championships in Kaposvar, Hungary tomorrow.

Martin McDonagh, Jack Conroy, Kane Tucker and Adam Dempsey produced tremendous performances to record wins today, but Callum Walsh, Michael Walsh and Zenja Jelisejenkovs bowed out despite brave displays.

McDonagh, Conroy, Tucker, who forced his opponent into two standing counts this afternoon, and Dempsey join. Terry Donoghue, Brandon McCarthy and Edward Donovan in the last-eight.

“Fantastic performances from all our boys today and it’s a tremendous achievement for such a small nation to have 60% of our squad still involved at this stage of the tournament, said Irish coach Billy McClean.

“We’re under no illusions as to the magnitude of the tasks facing us tomorrow, but our boys will be giving it everything when they step in the ring. They always do.”

BAKU DOUBLE FOR O’REILLY AND GARDINER

Laois middleweight Michael Reilly is one win from qualifying for Rio 2016 and Tipperary super-heavy DeanGardiner is two wins from the 31st Olympiad after both men recorded impressive victories at the Olympic qualifiers in Baku, Azerbaijan today.

O’Reilly beat Mongalia’s  Shinebayor Narmandakh 30-27 across the board and Gardiner claimed the first two rounds to oust Viktor Vychryst of the Ukraine 29-28 on all three cards

The top five middleweight in Baku qualify for Rio. Super-heavyweights must win gold as there is just one Olympic places in the 91kg+ class.

O’Reilly will now meet Azerbaijan’s Kamran Shakhsuvarly in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Gardiner is in against Moldova’s Alexei Zavatin in the semi-finals on Friday.

A win for O’Reilly will see him join Katie Taylor, Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward on the plane to the 31st Olympiad.

Two wins for Gardiner will suffice.

“Michael and Dean were top class today and they will take a lot of confidence from their performances going into their next bouts,” said Irish team manager Joe Hennigan.

The IABA extends its deep condolences to the McCabe family following the death of Victor McCabe.

The late Mr McCabe (late of Crumlin) was the beloved husband of Ann and loving father of Tanya, Suzanne, Caroline and Luke. Sadly missed by his loving wife, children and their partners, grandchildren Kelsey, Bobby and Mia, mam Rose, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended famliy and friends.
