Oliver McCarthy had to settle for silver at the European Youth Championships in Anapa, Russia today.

The Cork southpaw was beaten on a unanimous decision by Russia’s Beslan Khamzaev in the 60kg final at the Black Sea port.

McCarthy showcased some of his slick counter-punching skill in all three frames, but Khamzaev more aggressive approach was favoured by the judges.

The Leesider found the target with a stunning left straight down the middle in the last frame, the punch of the bout, but the durable Russian soaked it up and kept marching forward going down the final stretch of a close lightweight decider.

“It was a tough final and he was a tough opponent, admitted McCarthy, who won European Schoolboy gold in Anapa in 2012.

“I wanted to win the gold medal, but I’m very proud to have won the silver here given the quality of opposition. I would like to thank our coaches Billy and Dmitri and our team manager Stephen Connolly for all work they have done with me and my club coaches at home Peter Higgins and John O’Callaghan.

“Oliver has had a fantastic tournament against some of the best in the world here,” added Irish team manager Stephen Connolly. “It was a very close final and he gave it everything.

“We’re very proud of the performances of our entire squad and the team will be bringing home two medals. With a bit of luck it could have been more.”

Coaches Billy McClean and Dmitri Dimitruk hailed the performances of Team Ireland.

“The boys performed magnificently, absolutely magnificently. The only tragedy for us was the Russian that James McGivern clearly beat in the preliminaries won gold today. Anyone who knows anything about boxing knows that James won that fight hands down against the Russian boxer, said McClean.

“The performances here this week augur very well for the World Championships later this year.”

McCarthy and Monaghan’s Terry McEntee, who won bronze after reaching the flyweight semi-final, were presented with their medals today. McEntee received an ovation from Russian fans after his performance against Russian world champion Nikita Diskunov in Monday’s semi-finals.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home tomorrow night at 11pm via Dublin Airport via Heathrow.

Cork’s Oliver McCarthy upgraded his guaranteed bronze medal to at least silver at the European Youth Championships in Anapa, Russia today.

But Monaghan flyweight Terry McEntee had to settle for bronze despite a massive performance in his semi-final against Russia’s Nikita Diskunov.

McCarthy produced a composed display against Azerbaijan’s Sarhan Aliev – the Leesider had a great second round – to book his ticket in Tuesday’s lightweight final where he’ll meet Beslan Khamzaev of Russia.

McEntee’s aggression and relentless pursuit of Diskunov might have earned the decision that would have see him through to the 52kg final in another host country, but the Russian was finding the target with some slick counters.

Rounds two and three between McCarthy and the Azeri were almost impossible to call, but the Leeside southpaw dominated the second frame and that ultimately sealed victory.

He’ll now meet  Russia’s Beslan Khamzaev in Tuesday’s lightweight final four years after beating a Russian opponent in the 2012 European Schoolboy final in Anapa.

“Great performance from Oliver, particularly in the second round,” said Irish team manager Stephen Connolly. “The best is yet to come from him and his confidence will be high going into the final. Terry was magnificent. He gave it absolutely everything against a world class opponent.”

Billy McClean and Dmitri Dimitruk are working Ireland’s corner in Anapa.

A record 469 boxers from 105 nations have entered for the penultimate Olympic qualifiers in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Boxing begins Thursday in the Azeri capital. Ireland will employ a four-strong squad.

Light-welterweight Dean Walsh, middleweight Michael O’Reilly, heavyweight Darren O’Neill and super-heavyweight Dean Gardiner carry Ireland’s hopes.Walsh and O’Reilly will book Rio tickets if they finish in the top five in the 64kg and 75kg divisions. O’Neill and Gardiner have no room for error. They must win gold as there is just one Olympic place available in their weights.

Cuba’s London 2012 flyweight champion Robeisy Ramirez has entered for Baku at bantam.

Team Ireland – including our male Rio Olympians Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward –  and Sean McComb, Ray Moylette and Connor Wallace have been training and sparring in Baku with twenty other nations for over a week.

The nine return home tomorrow. Walsh, O’Reilly, who won European Games gold in Baku last year, O’Neill and Gardiner remain to put the finishing touches to their preparations for a tournament which will yield 39 Rio berths.

The final Olympic qualifier will be hosted in Vargas, Venezuela next month. Ostensibly a World Series of Boxing versus AIBA Pro Boxing clash, the Latin America event is also open to pro boxers – if they registered with and are selected by their National Federations.

Katie Taylor has also qualified for Rio 2016.
