??????
Ireland’s top prospects are heading into a crucial afternoon in Anapa, today, with four boxing for at least bronze at the European Youth Championships.

Monaghan’s Terry McEntee, Cork’s Oliver McCarthy, Derry’s Brett McGinty and Clare’s Martin John Mongan are in last- eight action at the Black Sea port.

Click here for today’s program. The EUBC program appears to have been duplicated and should read two sessions slated for decision not four.

Boxing begins at 6pm local time. Anapa is two hours ahead of Ireland.

McGinty and Mongan are in action in bouts 6 and 9 in Ring A and McEntee and McCarthy in bouts 2 and 3 in ring B.

McGinty meets Armenia’s Gurgen Madayan, an opponent he beat in the last-eight of the European Schoolboy Championships in Anapa in 2012.

Irish team manager Steven Connolly said that they Irish quartet are in top form and can’t wait to get their quarter-final bouts underway.

The remaining quarter finals will be decided tomorrow. Sunday is a rest day at the tournament. The semi-finals and finals are pencilled in for Monday and Tuesday.

IRISH SQUAD CONFIRMED FOR BAKU OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS

2016 NEw logo

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) have confirmed a four-strong squad for the penultimate Rio 2016 qualifiers in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Team-Delegations-Handbook_World-OGQ-V1

Dean Walsh, Michael O’Reilly, Darren O’Neill and Dean Gardiner, all current Irish Elite champions, will line out at light-welterweight, middleweight, heavyweight and super-heavyweight at the qualifiers which begin next Thursday in Baku.

The quartet are currently in training camp in Baku with Ireland’s six male Rio 2016 Olympians – Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward – and Ray Moylette and Connor Wallace.

Moylette and Wallace were under consideration for the light-welterweight and middleweight Irish vests for the Azerbaijan qualifiers. Both men have been training and sparring with Walsh and O’Reilly in the Azeri capital since last weekend.

However, after a detailed selection process under the expertise of Team Ireland head coach Zuar Antia and Irish coaches Eddie Bolger and John Conlan, Antia tonight (June 9th) recommended that Walsh and O’Reilly, who claimd European Games gold in Baku last year, join O’Neill and Gardiner on the Irish team for the qualifiers which yield 39 Olympics places.

The top five light-welterweights and middleweight in Baku will book tickets for Rio 2016. Heavyweights and super-heavyweights have no margin for error as they must win gold as there is only one Olympic berth available in each weight.

The final qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Vargas, Venezuela next month.

FOUR INTO LAST-EIGHT AT EUROPEAN YOUTHS

Four Irish boxers will battle in out for at least bronze at the European Youth Championships in Anapa, Russia tomorrow.

Brett McGinty produced a big performance this afternoon versus Hungary’s Laszio Kozak to book his place into the quarter-finals.

The Maygar welter, replying with plenty of return fire, provided solid opposition, but McGinty’s higher work-rate, relentless pursuit of his opponent and cleaner shots, particularly after he used his double jab as a triggering mechanism, deservedly earned him a unanimous decision.

The Oakleaf BC ace joins Terry McEntee, Oliver McCarthy and Martin John Mongan in the last-eight on Friday.

Jason Harty and Brian Kennedy bowed out today. Both men left everything in the ring against Georgia’s Iskekhan Madiev and Wales’ Sammy Lee.

Martin Jim Mongan took a standing count off a fairly innocuous-looking uppercut from Dzmitru Sinkin in the first round, and after he re-engaged with the Belarusian – with Mongan landing most of the shots in a brief exchange –  the ref bizarrely gave the Irish champion another count and stopped the contest.
