The finalists at the National Senior Cadet Championships are advised to bring two passport photographs and an up to date passport with them for Friday’s finals at Dublin’s National Stadium.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association are using the Championships as part of their selection process for next month’s European Junior Championships (June 15/24) in Keszthely, Hungary.

The Senior Cadet quarter-finals and semi-finals were decided at the famed Drimnagh BC in Dublin last weekend.

The Rebel County is guaranteed at least one title on Friday as Leeside aces Owen McDonagh and Callum Walsh meet in an all Cork derby at 50kg.

Boxing begins at 7pm. Please scroll down for results and draw.

WALSH BLASTS HER WAY INTO QUARTER-FINALS AT WOMEN’S WORLD ELITES

Grainner Walsh

Grainne Walsh pictured here with her Coach Dimar Dmitruk

Grainne Walsh produced a top class performance to claim victory on her World Elite Championships debut in Astana, Kazakhstan today.

The Sparticus BC (Offaly) welter bounced back from losing the first round on two of the three cards to dominate the remaining three frames en route to a unanimous decision over Poland’s Hanna Solecka to move to within one victory of at least bronze.

The 20-year-old will now meet Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khalzova in the quarter-finals on Tuesday one positive decision away from becoming to only Irish boxer besides Katie Taylor to claim a medal at this level.

Neither Walsh or Solecka had to go looking for each other this morning, but Walsh’s cleaner work was beginning to tell early in the second round.

The former Irish U/21 and Intermediate champion began finding the target with more regularity off both hands with her Polish opponent ending up on the floor. That was ruled a slip…….

Walsh soaked up a few shots on her way to victory but also took the third and sealed the win with a flurry of punches late in the fourth. Khalzova, meantime, beat the Uzbek No. 3 seed Shahnoza Nizamova today.

“I’ll be aiming for nothing less than a medal,” said Walsh before the start of the 9th edition of the World Women’s Championships.

Walsh, who received a bye into the last 16, was the only Irish boxer in action today. Kelly Harrington and Katie Taylor are between the ropes tomorrow in the last 16 of the tournament.

TAYLOR ADVANCES BUT BARR BOWS OUT IN ASTANA

Katie Taylor progressed to the last 16 of the AIBA World Women’s Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Astana, Kazakhstan today after chalking up a unanimous decision over Agnes Alexiusson.

The Bray woman will now meet Argentina’s Dayana Sanchez of Argentina on Monday after posting a 40-36,40-36,39-37 verdict over the durable Swede.

“Yes, I’m happy. I’m okay. It was good to get the first one out of the way, it always is,” Taylor told the Irish Times after her impressive victory.

Taylor ended up with a bloody nose after an accidental clash of heads with the ex World Youth champion – who Taylor beat in her hometown of Bray last year.

But that was the only concern on a day when the Wicklow orthodox more or less dictated the terms of engagement in all four rounds, answering Alexiusson’s forays with three, four and at times five-punch combinations.

The pick of her shots was a superb left hook with wobbled the Swede in the final frame.

The top four women in the lightweight class in Astana qualify for Rio. Taylor is also aiming to become the only woman in the history of the sport to claim six successive World Elite titles.

Alexiusson was always going to be a tricky start, but Taylor met the challenge full on this afternoon to once again remind her rivals that she’s still the one to beat if they want to call themselves an AIBA World lightweight champion.

Earlier today, Donna Barr lost on her World Elite debut to Canada’s Kim Klavel.

The Donegal light-fly appeared to have curbed Klavel’s enthusiasm in the first round with some well-timed counters off both hands.

But Klavel edged the frame 10-9 across the board and forced the Irishwoman into standing counts off two big rights in the second and third before taking fourth on all cards to seal a comprehensive victory.

Grainne Walsh IS in last 16 action tomorrow in Astana. Click here for Sunday program. Astan is five hours ahead of Ireland.
