Congratulations to Kane Tucker.

The Holy Trinity ABC ace was was recently presented with the Mary Peters Award for Achievements in Boxing and was also awarded the Mary Peters Trust Sponsorship.

Tucker, a pupil at St Joseph’s Boys High School, is the first Newry man to scoop the award and the fourth boxer after Rio Olympians Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan and Carl Frampton.

Top international golfer Rory McElroy has also won this award.

The aim of the Mary Peters Trust is to help aspiring young athletes, whatever their sport or social background, to realise their maximum potential by assisting them in both a financial and advisory capacity.

Team Ireland arrived in Astana, Kazakhstan last night.

Team manager Anna Moore reports that the squad will have a light training session this afternoon at 4pm (local time) in the build up to the start of the AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Astana on Thursday.

The eight-strong squad will train with a number of nations at the Sports Academy in the Kazakh capital over the next four days.

The general weigh-in and draw will be held Wednesday. Boxing begins Thursday.

The top four women (the semi-finalists) in their three Olympic weights – flyweight, lightweight and middleweight – for women qualify for Rio 2016.

Ceire Smith, Olympic lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Christina Desmond line out for Ireland in the three Olympic weights.

Seventy three nations represented by 345 boxers have registered to compete in the 9th edition of the AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships.

Thirty lightweight bouts will be decided Thursday, according to a draft schedule on the offical tournament website.

Astana is five hours ahead of Ireland.

The four outstanding finals at the U/18 Competition were decided at the National Stadium tonight.

Terry McEntee, James McGivern, Oliver McCarthy and Jason Harty had their hands raised in victory.

McEntee and McGivern finished on top of the fly and bantam podiums on unanimous decisions over Craig Kavanagh and Nathan May, and Oliver McCarthy, an ex European Schoolboy champion, emerged victorious over current World Junior silver medallist Paddy Donovan.

McEntee’s victory secured a 20th Irish title for the Old School BC in Monaghan since the club was reformed in 2008.

Limerick’s Jason Harty took the last gold medal on offer after edging out Galway’s Kieran Molloy on a split decision.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association are using the National U/18 Competition as part of their selection process for the European Youth Championships which begin in Anapa, Russia on June 6.
