Rio 2016 Olympians Paddy Barnes, Joe Ward, David Oliver Joyce, Michael Conland and Irish coaches Eddie Bolger and John Conlan with OCI President Pat Hickey today

The world’s top male and female boxers are gearing up for three finals tilts at qualifying for Rio 2016.The journey that began early in 2015 with 286 places up for grabs – in reality that’s 272 places as the host nation takes six berths and eight are handed out in invitations – has three qualifiers remaining in May, June and July.

The first of these will be next month at the 9th AIBA World Women’s Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, followed by a final world qualifier (for men) in Baku, Azerbaijan in June and a World Series of Boxing (WSB) versus AIBA Pro Boxing (AIBA) tournament in late June or early July at a host city to be confirmed.

201 athletes are over the line so far, with some, including Ireland’s Michael Conlan, actually qualifying twice. Conlan initially booked a ticket through the World Series of Boxing (WSB) and then made the qualification standard again at the World Men’s Championships in Doha, Qatar last year after becoming the first Irish male boxer to claim an AIBA World Elite title. The World place prevailed and the WSB spot earned by Conlan kicked back to the next best placed WSB boxer.

Conlan, Paddy Barnes, who will lead out Team Ireland in Rio, Brendan Irvine, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward will represent Irish boxing at the 31st Olympiad.

Team Ireland will be aiming for seven further places in the remaining qualifiers in the women’s flyweight, lightweight and middleweight classes and the men’s light- welterweight, middleweight, heavyweight and super-heavyweight classes.

The WSB versus APB clash represents journey’s end as 278 will have qualified, with the final eight places to be handed out in invitations.

However, if Irish boxing qualifies a light-welter in Baku the WSB versus APB tournament will be of academic interest to the sport in this country.

77 places are up for grabs in the three remaining qualifiers. 286 boxers – 250 men and 36 women – compete at each Olympics.

“It’s just a big as winning a medal.”

That was the thrilled reaction of three-time Irish Olympian Paddy Barnes today after he was selected as Team Ireland flag bearer for Rio 2016.

Barnes is the seventh Irish boxer to be selected as a Team Ireland flag bearer at the Olympic Games, following in the footsteps of Matt Flanagan (1928), Tony Byrne (1956), Jim McCourt (1968), Wayne McCullough (1988), Francie Barrett (1996) and Katie Taylor (2012).

Barnes’ selection was announced at a media conference today to mark 100 days until the 2016 Games begin in Rio.

“I’m over the moon. It’s a great honour to be put on me and I’m just over the moon,” said the Belfast light-flyweight following today’s announcement.

“I’m really, really grateful. It’s not very often people carry the flag at the Games. Carrying the flag for me, leading your country at the biggest sporting event in the world, it’s just great, added the two-time Olympic bronze medallist.

“I’m delighted to have been asked to carry the Irish flag into the Olympic Stadium at the Opening Ceremony.

“It’s an amazing feeling to represent Ireland at an Olympic Games and I’ve been lucky enough to experience it twice before already. Going to my third Olympic Games as the flag bearer for Team Ireland now is just an incredible honour.

“I will be going for gold in Rio in the ring but I will also have the responsibility of helping to build a really positive environment for all Irish athletes. I could not be more excited about the next 100 days.”

OCI President Patrick Hickey said: “I am delighted to announce that our hugely talented boxer Paddy Barnes has been selected as Team Ireland’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony.

“Paddy already has two Olympic medals to his name, and he’s a reigning Commonwealth Games champion. So we have high hopes of him bringing home another medal.

“More importantly, his commitment to the cause of Irish boxing and Irish sport makes him a role model for aspiring young athletes in Ireland and the natural choice as Ireland’s flag bearer.”

Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward have qualified for Rio.

Irish male and female boxing will be aiming for further places in the three remaining qualifiers in May, June and July before the 2016 Games begin on August 5.

AIBA WORLD WOMEN’S RANKINGS AHEAD OF OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS

rio

There has been little or no change in the updated AIBA World Women’s rankings ahead of next month’s AIBA World World Women’s Elite Championships in Kazakhstan.

The tournament, which is doubling up as the final Olympic qualifier for females, begins in Astana on May 19. The rankings will be used for seeding in Central Asia.

Katie Taylor remains at No. 1 in the lightweight table, a position she has held for ten uninterrupted years. Ceire Smith is No. 24 at flyweight.

The top four (semi-finalists) in the three Olympic weights for women – flyweight, lightweight and middleweight – qualify for Rio in Kazakhstan.

In the event of boxer(s) achieving the qualification standard twice, the World place(s) prevail and the place(s) previously earned through the Continental qualifiers kick back to the winner of the box off for 3rd or 4th place in the Continental qualifiers or both 3rd & 4th place finalists.

Taylor will also be aiming to become the first female boxer in the history of the sport to win six successive World titles in Kazakhstan. The ambition, if realised, will be more than enough to qualify the Bray woman for her second Olympics.

The Irish squad for the 9th edition of the AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships will be confirmed shortly.

Meantime, the recent European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey was not an AIBA ranking tournament.

Please scroll down for list of female boxers qualified for Rio 2016.  Thirty six athletes – 12 in each class – compete in each of the three weights for women at the Olympics.

Following Kazakhstan, eleven boxers will have qualified in each weight. The final place in each weight will be distributed through the Tripartite Commission (invation places).
