Board Of Directors

The Board of Directors consist of the following people:

Joe Christle ML

Joe Christle ML is the current Chairman of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association and has been a well-respected Barrister in the Law Library within the Four Courts in Dublin for over 20 years. Notably, he earned the Title of Irish National Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1980.

Pat Ryan 

Pat Ryan is a very well respected boxing coach and prominent member of the IABA for over 30 years. He was elected IABA president on 4th October 2015.


Ciaran Kirwan

Ciaran Kirwan is a qualified solicitor for almost 25 years and a managing partner of Margertson and Greene Solicitors; a practice which was established in the 1920’s, specialising in Conveyance and Litigation. He comes from a strong and well respected boxing family has been immersed in boxing from a very young age. He is a keen golfer playing of a single handicap figure who is a former Leinster Champion and All Ireland runner-up. Ciaran is also a former president of Donabate Gold Club in Co. Dublin and holds a BA degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Economic Science from University College Dublin.

Des Fitzgerald

Des Fitzgerald currently holds the position of CEO of EBS Limited.He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Directors. He a former Irish Rugby International player and father to Irish International rugby union player, Luke Fitzgerald. Des brings a wealth of senior executive management as well as international sporting experience to the IABA Board.


Joe Hernon

Joe currently holds the position of Vice President of IABA since October 2015. Joe has been an active member of the IABA  over 40 years and has held many senior positions within County, Provincial and National level including Child Protection Officer. He is a former AIBA qualified Judge and currently a  member of the IABA Athletes and Youth Commission.

Bernadette Harold

Bernie Harold is from Lanesborough in Co Longford and joined her local club as a nine year old. Her father, Tom was the Coach of the 1960 heavyweight Olympian, Joe Casey. As a child Bernie sparred in her club with boys because there were no girls in clubs then. In 1976 she qualified as the first woman Judge of Amateur Boxing in Europe. In 1980 she was appointed Development Officer of the IABA – the first paid Boxing employee of the IABA and was responsible for the introduction and design of the Boxers Record Card which is still in use today. Following the birth of her twin daughters Alexandra and Victoria Bernie took a break from boxing. She returned as Hon Secretary of the Leinster Council in 2012 and in September 2015 Bernie made history for the third time in Irish Boxing by becoming the first woman in the 104 year history of the Association to be elected President of a Provincial Council.

Gerry O’ Mahoney

Gerry is the Provincial President of Munster.

Kevin Duffy


Dr. Joe McKeever

Has been a medical advisor to the IABA for a number of years, he is a day surgeon with Connolly Hospital and has extensive medical experience

David Kearns

Is a senior project manager with AIB and has considerable senior management and governance experience
