Tim O’Sullivan, the father of Cork boxing, was recently honoured by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Chris O’Leary, for 70 years of service to the promotion and development of boxing on Leeside.

At a very pleasant ceremony, O’Sullivan was joined by family and friends at City Hall to mark a lifetime of service to the noble art.

Among the attendance were the President and CEO of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA), Pat Ryan and Fergal Carruth, Gerry O’Mahony, President of the Munster Council, County Board and Cork Ex Boxers Association (CEBA) officials and hosts of friends from various sporting organisations.

The IABA President and CEO also attended the recent opening of the Cork County Boxing Board interim headquarters at Churchfield, where Fergal Carruth spoke passionately of the contribution of Leeside to Irish boxing.

The Lord Mayor outlined the highs of O’Sullivan’s career and stressed that he left an indelible mark on the boxing landscape.

Pat Ryan added that his beneficence to boxing was legendary, pointing out that O’Sullivan’s legacy would be cherished and remembered.

“His contribution has been enormous over an extraordinary period of time,“ acknowledged the IABA chief.

O’Sullivan boxed for Ireland on numerous occasions and was a final trialist for the Irish squad for the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

That Olympiad took place at Earls Court. Many believe that O’Sullivan should have been selected and the IABA subsequently presented him with a specially commissioned silver medallion in recognition of his international prowess.

O’Sullivan was born in Sundays Well in the northside of the city. He had three brothers and five sisters. His early education was provided at the famous Blarney CBS. When he was ten-years-old, his father, a Kerryman, immigrated to England for work and took his family with him.

It was in London that O’Sullivan developed an interest in boxing at a local grammar school. The family returned to Cork after a number of years and settled in the city centre, with O’Sullivan continuing his education at the South Mon on Douglas street.

He played football with Rock Rovers and hockey with Harlequins before eventually becoming involved, aged 18, with the CCNBC club run by the Christian Brothers in Lavitts Quay.

O’Sullivan made rapid progress and was selected on many Cork and Irish teams. His first international outing, which he won, was against the USA. A seasoned international at this point, he became a major draw throughout Ireland from City Hall in his hometown to City Hall in Belfast.

He also had the distinction of being the last man to compete on a barge at the High Seas tournament in Cobh in the 1940s. Times were tough during WW2 and O’Sullivan was once presented with a loaf of bread after winning a bout in Agabollougue.

Following that presentation he affectionately became knows as the “bread winner”, but as O’Sullivan, pointing to a magnificent Foxford rug he won later in his career, often said, “man can’t live by bread alone.”

O’Sullivan favourite boxers were Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis. The Corkman made friends with English and German legends Henry Cooper and Karl Mildenberger, both of whom were beaten by his idol Ali. The great John Conteh was another friend.

In 1972, at an All-Ireland hurling final, O’Sullivan met the equally great Maxie McCullagh. O’Sullivan attended a meeting of the Dublin Ex Boxers Association with McCullagh and brought the idea back to Cork, and, hand in glove with his friend “Paddy “The Champ” Martin, founded the Cork Ex Boxers Association (CEBA) which today is at its strongest ebb in 43 years.

O’Sullivan has served in every capacity with CEBA and was coach to the Ballinlough BC. He brought many international teams to Cork, including the great Polish squad of 1984. For 59 years O’Sullivan worked as a physio from his own premises on Maylor street.

His expertise as an injury advisor was much sought after by athletes from all codes throughout Ireland. In 1975, O’Sullivan was physio to the Mick O’Dwyer led Kerry squad who would go on to become the greatest football team of all time.

O’Sullivan was also physio to a number of famous touring rugby teams, including the All Blacks, Australia and Springboks and worked with League of Ireland sides Cork Athletic, Evergreen and Cork Hibs.

During the Olympic ceremony at the Centenary celebrations of Cork boxing at Bishop Lucey Park last year, Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin referred to O’Sullivan as a boxing encyclopaedia and during a visit to Áras an Uachtaráin, President Michael D. Higgins described the Leesider as one of the great boxing ambassadors.

After 70 years of outstanding service to the sport, it was timely and fitting that O’Sullivan was hailed last Tuesday.

The Lord Mayor said: “His contribution may be matched, but it will never be surpassed.”

ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKEND

Dervla Duffy celebrates victory

Dervla Duffy celebrates victory

The journey to Rio 2016 resumes at Dublin’s National Stadium tonight.

The women’s semi-finals will be decided at the flagship event of Irish boxing at the home of Irish boxing.

The men’s preliminaries get underway tomorrow evening. The draw will be made between 11.30am and 12pm tomorrow after the weigh-ins between 8.30am and 11am tomorrow.

The IABA are running the National Elites twice this year to assist Ireland’s boxers heading into the Olympic qualifiers in 2016.

There is a precedent for holding the Championships twice in the same calendar year, as the IABA ran the National Elite Championships twice in 2003 in the lead up to the Olympics qualifiers, with Andy Lee, the current WBO World middleweight champion, booking a ticket for Athens 2004 after winning bronze at the 2004 Europeans in Croatia.

AIBA World No. 1 and World No. 3 ranked Katie Taylor and Michael O’Reilly, both current European Games champions, have entered for the second edition of the Elites in 2015.

Adam Nolan

Taylor, the current Olympic, World, European, European Games and European Union lightweight champion, may box for an Irish title – all four of her Irish belts have been won on walkovers so far – for the first time in her remarkable career at a venue where she featured as a 15-year-old in the first ever officially sanctioned female bout versus Alanna Murphy in 2001.

Clare’s Kayleigh Murrihy-McCormack and Tipperary’s Shauna O’Keeffe have entered against the Bray woman for the vacant belt. The Munster pair, both 21 and both current and ex Intermediate champions with ten Irish underage titles between them, clash over four, two minute rounds in the 60kg semi-final on Friday for the right to face the best pound-for-pound female boxer on the planet on November 27.

“I’ve trained very hard for the Elites and I’m looking forward to getting the opportunity to box for an Irish belt,” said Taylor, who was one of the first to weigh-in last Friday morning.

Elsewhere in the women’s Olympic weight classes, Ceire Smith and Michaela Walsh have received byes into the 51kg final. Smith scored a stunning split decision over current World Elite champion Marlen Esparza (USA) in Poland this year, while Walsh is the 2014 Commonwealth Games finalist.

Michael O’Reilly has had a spectacular year by any standard. The Portlaoise BC middleweight won European Games gold and World Elite bronze in 2015 to move to No. 3 in the AIBA rankings in the 75kg class.

He was controversially denied a place at Rio 2016 following a “defeat” to Egypt’s Hosam Abdin in a box-off for a place at the Olympics at the World Championships in Qatar.

O’Reilly will be aiming to bounce back from that outrageous result to get another opportunity at Olympic qualification, but will come up against formidable opposition in the middleweight division at the National Elites.

Meanwhile, with Paddy Barnes having qualified for Rio in the light-fly through the World Series of Boxing, Brendan Irvine, who claimed his first Elite belt at light-fly earlier this year, has moved up to fly and could meet Limerick’s Myles Casey, the defending champion.

Three-time European Union Elite champion David Oliver Joyce makes a welcome return to action at the National Stadium in the lightweight class and could go head-to-head with defending champion Sean McComb, a European Games bronze medallist, in what will surely be an explosive 60kg duel.

London 2012 Olympians Darren O’Neill and Adam Nolan, the defending champions in the heavyweight and welterweight classes, are also in the mix in the flagship tournament of Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport.

The first European men’s and women’s Olympic qualifier will be held in Istanbul, Turkey in April, followed by the Women’s World Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Kazakhstan in May.

There will be further qualifiers through the World Series of Boxing and AIBA Pro Boxing and one final world qualifier for men in Baku, Azerbaijan in June.

So far, Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan and Joe Ward have qualified for Rio 2016. There are ten further Rio 2016 places – seven male and three female – up for grabs for Ireland’s Elite boxers between now and next June.

It’s all to play for on the road to the 31st Olympiad. The journey resumes at the National Stadium this Friday evening and continues over the coming weekends.

The women’s finals will be decided on November 27th. The men’s finals will be resolved on December 11th and tickets can be secured through tickets.ie

EUROPEAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Willie Donoghue

Former AIBA World Junior champion Willie Donoghue is focused on adding another gold medal to his impressive CV at the European Youth Championships in Kolobrzeg, Poland.

The St Michael’s Athy BC flyweight, who is part of an eight-strong squad in Poland, has put in big training shifts preparing for the last Continental tournament of the year.

Garry Cully, the last Irish boxer to win European Youth gold in the Netherlands in 2013, has been helping the Irish champion prepare.

Donoghue said: “I have trained twice a day, seven days a week to try and get the gold medal in the upcoming EUBC European Confederation Youth Boxing Championships.

“I won the gold medal in the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament in Russia and have been sparring with some strong boxers, especially Garry Cully who won the title in 2013. I am focusing on Kolobrzeg before my elite years.”

Irish coach John Conlan reported this morning that Team Ireland are in top shape and looking ahead to the opening bell on Saturday.

The squad have been training with the host country, Germany and Hungary and had test matches with all three nations in training camp in Kolobrzeg.

Frankie Cleary will captain the Irish squad at the 25th European Youth Championships.
