FRANCE CLAIMS WOMEN’S OLYMPIC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

France’s Estelle Mossely claimed the women’s Olympic lightweight title at Rio 2016 tonight.The current World champion came from behind after losing the first two rounds to beat China’s Junhua Yin after getting the nod on a split decision.

Katie Taylor was the first woman to win the Olympic 60kg title in London four years ago.

Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov,who beat Brendan Irvine in the preliminaries in Rio,upgraded his guaranteed bronze to at least silver tonight and big Joe Joyce of Great Britain beat Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko to book his ticket into the super-heavy final versus France’s Tony Yoka.

Joyce and Dychko trained with Team Ireland in Dublin this summer.

Claresa Shields of the USA is one win away from retaining her Olympic middleweight title. She’ll meet Holland’s Nouchka Fontijn,who was beaten by Cork’s Christina Desmond earlier this year, in the 75kg gold medal match after both women won tonight.

IRELAND MEET TEAM GB IN ENGLAND TONIGHT

Ireland meet Team Great Britain in Warrington, England tonight and Manchester tomorrow evening in an international Youth and Junior Women’s clash.

Team GB are preparing for next month’s European Youth and Junior Women’s Championships in Ordu,Turkey between September 18/27.

The Irish squad for Ordu will be confirmed shortly.

The Girls in Green had a training session in the Hook and Jab Gym in Warrington yesterday, pictured below.

RIO 2016 DAY 13 SCHEDULE

Pavilion 6 venue for boxing at Rio.

Current World Elite champion Estelle Mossely of France and China’s Junhua Yin meet in today’s women’s lightweight final at Rio 2016.

The title was first won by Katie Taylor at London 2012, the inaugural tournament for women’s Olympic boxing.

Taylor has won three of her four fights with Mossely and beat Yin once.

Eight semi-finals and one final will be decided today as the tournament winds toward its conclusion this weekend.

Team Ireland will arrive home from the Rio Olympics on Wednesday next, August 24th, at 17.10 to Terminal One,  Dublin Airport on Flight  LH 980.

The Team Ireland squad will include athletes from boxing, sailing, hockey and other sports.

The opening session of the U/18 Men’s Championships gets underway at the Dublin’s National Stadium tonight.

Thirteen bouts will be decided at the home of Irish boxing. A second session will be resolved tomorrow.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association are using the tournament as part of their selection process for November’s AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg, Russia

Note – Only weigh-ins are on finals day on August 27th from 8am to 9am at the National Stadium.
