Further to the decision taken yesterday by AIBA with regard to the reassessment of the judges and referees officiating during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the AIBA Vice Presidents and Executive Board members have decided to reassign with immediate effect the current AIBA Executive Director to a new role within the organisation. Consequently, the operational responsibilities for the remainder of the Olympic Boxing Competition will now fall under the responsibilities of the most senior Vice President of the AIBA Executive Board, Mr Franco Falcinelli, President of the European Boxing Confederation.The Olympic Games, of which Boxing has been a part since 1904, represent the pinnacle of all sports. Since the beginning of Rio 2016, AIBA has conducted over 250 bouts and remains fully committed to fair play in boxing, always seeking to act in the boxers’ utmost interests.

The decisions taken emphasise that AIBA will not shy away from its responsibilities and will continue to ensure a level playing field and a fair and transparent sport. It is of paramount importance to protect our sport and its R&J community whose integrity has been put into question.

Russian bantamweight Vladimir Nikitin has ceded a walkover to Shakur Stevenson of the USA at Rio 2016.

Both men were due to meet this evening in the 56kg semi-final, but Nikitin withdrew due to the injuries he suffered in his semi-final at the hands of Michael Conlan.

Three judges awarded Nikitin their decision in that fight.

Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez, who won flyweight gold at the London Olympics, beat Uzbekistan’s Murodjan Akhamadaliev this evening to set up the final with Stevenson.

Both Ramirez and  Stevenson are now guaranteed at least silver.

Cuba’s Julio Cesar La Cruz, who beat Ireland’s Joe Ward in the 2015 World Elite final, won light-heavy gold tonight in Rio.

According to reports, Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin, who was controversially adjudged to have beaten Michael Conlan,will cede a walkover to Shakur Stevenson of the USA in today’s semi-finals because of the injuries he sustained in the quarter-finals against the Irish bantamweight.

If Nikitin, who is guaranteed bronze, cedes a walkover, New Jersey bantam Stevenson will automatically upgrade his guaranteed bronze to at least silver.

Meanwhile, France’s Estelle Mossely and China’s Yin Junhua will meet in the 2016 Olympic lightweight final in Rio.

Both women won their 60kg semi-finals yesterday.

Yunhua beat Finland’s Mira Potkonen and Mossely advanced after Russia’s Anastasiia Beliakova appeared to suffer a shoulder injury in the first round in a repeat of the 2016 World Elite final which Mossely won.

Potkonen assured herself at least bronze after shocking Katie Taylor on a split decision in the quarter-finals.

In the women’s 75kg class, Dutch middleweight Nouchka Fontun also guaranteed herself a minimum of bronze on a majority decision over Great Britain’s Savannah Marshall yesterday.

Cork’s Christina Desmond sensationally beat Fontun, ranked No. 2 in the world, in the European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey in April.

Uzbekistan’s Shakhobin Zoirov, a victor over Irish flyweight Brendan Irvine in the preliminaries in Rio, decisioned Azerbaijan’s No. 1 seed Elvin Mamishzada in Wednesday’s quarter-finals.

Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yeleussinov claimed welterweight gold after recording a unanimous decision over Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giyasov in the 69kg decider on Wednesday.

Kazakhstan took part in a training camp and test match with Ireland at Dublin’s National Stadium in May, although the new Olympic champion didn’t participate because of a slight injury concern.

World Elite champion Michael Conlan has received a touching letter from a young Dublin boy.

The five-year-old offered the World No.1 his school gold medal as a consolation following Conlan’s highly controversial defeat to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin in the 56kg quarter-final at Rio 2016.

Finn McManus told the World Elite champion:”I want you to have my school medal because you are a winner.”

“You are the best boxer in the world.”

Conlon responding via Twitter, said he has a gift for the boy.

“Very warming message from this young lad, if anyone knows who he is, could they please tell him I have a gift for him,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile,the International Boxing Association today confirmed that some refs and judges will no longer officiate at the Rio Games following Conlan’s last-eight bout with Nikitin.
