Ireland’s male Olympians move into the Olympic village just after noon local time today after finishing up their final training camp with Brazil and the USA yesterday with the countdown to the opening bell for boxing at the Games just over a week away.

The team have been training and sparring with the Brazilians and the Americans at a naval base in the host city for the 31st Olympiad.

Male boxing begins on August 6 at the 9,000 capacity Pavilion 6 venue. The draw for the tournament will be made Thursday, August 4 at 11am (local time) at the Village Mall in Barra, Rio.

Two hundred and eighty six boxers – 250 males and 36 females – go into the hat.

Katie Taylor joins the team on August 2. Female boxing begins on August 12.

The light-flyweights, lightweights, light-heavyweights and heavyweights are the first in action on August 6, although whether Paddy Barnes, David Oliver Joyce and Joe Ward, Ireland’s representatives in the first three aforementioned weights, are out on Day 1 is contingent on seeding.

Barnes has one official duty to perform before he begins trading leather with the world’s top light-flyweights at his third successive Olympics.

The Belfast dynamo leads out Team Ireland at the opening ceremony for the Games on August 5.

Barnes is the 7th Irish boxer to be chosen as Irish flag bearer at an Olympic opening ceremony after Matt Flanagan at Amsterdam 1928.

European Confederation Schoolboys Boxing Championships Day6 Schedule

Ireland will be taking home six medals from the 14th European Schoolboy Championships in Zagreb,Croatia.

The colour of those medals will be determined at the weekend, but, as things stand, at least six bronze are in the post.

Cain Lewis, Patrick Collins, Jason Myers and Jason Irwin impressively won in the quarter-finals today to join Francis Maughan and William Hayden, who both won yesterday, in the semi-finals.

Lewis and Collins did a double over Italy’s Daniel Salerno and Giuseppe Recuderoi and Myers completed the hat-trick against Romania’s Valentin Laurentiu this afternoon. Top performances all round from the trio.

Irwin excelled en route to a unanimous decision over Ageev Nikitin of Russia this evening. The Castleblaney BC stand out refused to be bullied, held his ground when he had to in the face of almost constant aggression and repeatedly found the target with slick shots off both hands.

Jonathan Hughes and Jamie Edwards were involved in cracking bouts this evening but had to settle for a top eight finish.

Hughes, who showed his class in sportingly hold the hand of his opponent aloft after a fiery three-rounder, was on the wrong end of the unanimous decision to Maksym Havryliuk of the Ukraine in a contest which could have gone either way.

Likewise with Edwards who gave a fine account of himself in another close battle with Andrei Voevodin, the Russian getting the verdict after three tight frames in Zagreb.

The Ireland v Russia head-to-head after seven bouts in Croatia this week now stands at 4-3 to Russia.

Friday is a rest day at the tournament.

Ireland’s semi-finalists will be back in action on Saturday targeting places in Sunday’s finals.
