OLYMPIC DRAW LOOMS IN RIO

Michael Conland and Paddy Barnes in Rio

Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes in Rio

The boxing draw for the 2016 Olympics will be made this Thursday, August 4, at 11am local time (3pm Irish time) in Barra, Rio.

286 boxers go into the hat. Male boxing is scheduled to begin on August 6 and female boxing on August 12.

The light-flyweights, lightweights and light-heavyweights are slated for Day 1 of the tournament on Saturday, but whether Paddy Barnes, David Oliver Joyce and Joe Ward are between the ropes is contingent on seeding.

Male seeding is determined by performances in AIBA Open Boxing (regular amateur boxing), the World Series of Boxing (WSB)  and AIBA Pro Boxing (APB).

Female athletes only compete in AIBA Open Boxing (AOB).

Three current (male) pro boxers have qualified for Rio, although a number of pro fighters who have returned under the AIBA umbrella through APB have also qualified.

Barnes will be appearing at his third Olympics in Rio and Katie Taylor, who departs for Rio today, and Michael Conlan their second. Brendan Irvine, David Oliver Joyce, Michael O’Reilly, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward will be making their debuts.

Barnes leads out Team Ireland at the Opening Ceremony at the Maracana Stadium on Friday.

The Belfast light-fly is the 7th Irish boxer since Matt Flanagan in 1932 to be selected as Irish flag bearer and the second successive boxer after Taylor at London 2012 to do the honours.

It’s anticipated that the opening ceremony will attract a worldwide TV audience of over 1 billion people.

“It’s an amazing feeling to represent Ireland at an Olympic Games and I’ve been lucky enough to experience it twice before already,” said Barnes. a three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic bronze medallist.

“I will be going for gold in Rio in the ring, but I will also have the responsibility of helping to build a really positive environment for all Irish athletes.”

Just over 100 Irish boxers have competed at the Games since Ireland first entered the Olympics at Paris 1924.

HAYDEN AND MYERS STRIKE DOUBLE GOLD AT EURO SCHOOLBOYS

William Hayden and his dad Paul in Zagreb

William Hayden and his dad Paul in Zagreb.

William Hayden and Jason Myers struck double gold at the European Schoolboy Championships in Zagreb,Croatia today.

The Dublin and Galway duo, appearing in back-to-back finals, beat Andrii Grynnyk of the Ukraine and Dmitry Babich of Russia in the 65kg and 68kg deciders to take Ireland’s gold medal haul since the inaugural European Schoolboy Championships in Rome in 2003 to thirteen.

The marauding Hayden, as he has consistently done throughout this tournament, repeatedly stepped inside the longer reach of an opponent to deliver the big shots, particularly off his right, against the tall and rangy Grynnyk to have his hand raised on victory on a split decision in a fight the Dubliner dominated.

Myers stood toe-to-toe against Babich when he had to and battled it out, but the Galway ace also picked off some wonderful punches off the front and back foot en route to the top of the 68kg podium on a unanimous decision.

The final score after nine bouts between Ireland and Russia in Zagreb stands at 5-4 to Ireland. Hayden and Myers won two of those contests.

Igor Khmil (Smithfield), Brian Barry (Riverstown), JP Kinsella (Monkstown) and Eoin Pluck (Arklow) were working Ireland’s corner in Zagreb.

Irish boxing will also be taking home four bronze medals from Croatia, with Francis Maughan, Cain Lewis, Paddy Collin and Jason Irwin finishing in podium positions. Team Ireland competed in 33 bouts at the 14th edition of the tournament.

The Irish haul now stands at 79 medals won since the 1st European Schoolboy Championships in Rome 13 years ago. Click here for medal count.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport via Frankfurt at 11.05pm on Monday morning. All family members, clubs and media are invited to attend Monday’s homecoming.

Boxing2016 – EUBC European Confederation Schoolboys Boxing Championships Finals Schedule

Ireland’s boxers will once again be weighing-in on finals day at a major tournament tomorrow morning.

Jason Myers and William Hayden are through to Sunday’s finals at the European Schoolboy Championships in Zagreb,Croatia.

Both young men upgraded their bronze medals to at least silver in impressive style in today’s semi-finals.

But Cain Lewis,Francis Maughan,Patrick Collins and Jason Irwin had to settle for bronze despite big performances at the last-four stage of the tournament.

Lewis and Irwin can consider themselves particularly unlucky to not be in Sunday’s deciders after being adjudged to have lost on split decisions.

Hayden put in another massive performance to see off the challenge of Russia’s Viktor Kashin over three rounds.

The head-to-head clashes between Ireland and Russia in Zagreb now stands at 4-4.

Earlier today, Myers showed his class to book his ticket into the 68kg final at the expense of England’s Ryan Dicken.

Collins and Maughan, who was involved in a slug fest with Croatia’s Matej Hlaca, left absolutely everything in the ring.

“The entire squad gave it everything today and we’re happy with what we got,” said team manager Paddy Gallagher.

“But Jason Irwin clearly won his fight. He won every round and it should have been three wins for Ireland today and we should have three into the finals.
