Irish 2016 Euro Schoolboys squad and staff.

Ireland are approaching 100 medals at  European Schoolboy Championship – 11 of which are gold – since the inaugural tournament in Rome in 2003.

Team Ireland added to the tally at the 14th edition of the tournament in Zagreb, Croatia this week.

David Joyce claimed our first gold in the Eternal City in 2003 and current WBA World pro champion Carl Frampton took home silver.

Four Irish Olympians – John Joe Joyce, David Oliver Joyce, Michael O’Reilly and Joe Ward – have medalled at this level over the last 13 years.

The Irish 2012 squad claimed the most silverware – 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 6 Bronze – from Anapa, Russia to command second spot in the medals table behind the host nation.

Two Irish boxers have won three Best Boxers Award at the European Schoolboys. John Joyce 2010/11 and Jordan Myers 2013.

GORMANSTON SUMMER CAMP BEGINS ON AUGUST 7TH

Summer Camp

The Gormanston Summer Camp which runs from Sunday, August 7th until Friday August 12th inclusive, is requiring all perspective boxers and clubs to have the remainder of their monies paid by the deadline of August 1st.

Any boxer who still wishes to be considered for this excellent opportunity to develop their technical and tactical ability and improve as a boxer needs to get their name and money in to Sally at sally@iaba.ie or 01-4543525 as soon as possible.

The camp fee is €400 for a single room or €360 for a dormitory room which sleeps up to 6 boxers. This fee includes transport to and from Gormanston from the National Boxing Stadium and breakfast, lunch and dinner along with full use of all the facilities and the coaching!

Former attendees include World Silver medalist Eamer Coughlan (pictured), World Silver medalist Paddy Donovan (pictured with his brother Edward and father Martin), European Champions Jordan Myers, Aaron McKenna, Edward Donovan (pictured with brother Paddy and dad Martin), European Silver Medalists Brandon McCarthy (pictured) and Stephen Cairns (pictured – and hoping to claim gold in Croatia next week) and National Elite Champion Stephen McKenna. Another Gormanston attendee is 5 times Irish Champion William Hayden (pictured) who is going to his second European Championships this week in search of a European Title.

The Irish male Olympic squad arrived in Rio,host city for the 2016 Olympics, in the early hours of this morning after a long journey from Dublin.

Irish head coach Zaur Antia confirmed that the panel will have a light session amongst themselves today and begin a training camp with the host nation and the USA tomorrow before moving into the Olympic village on July 29. Male boxing begins on August 6.

Katie Taylor joins the squad on August 2nd. Women’s boxing is not scheduled to begin until August 12.

286 boxers – 250 males and 36 females – compete at each Olympics.

Three professional boxers have also qualified for Rio, marking the first time that pro fighters will compete at the Olympics, whch debuted as an Olympic event in 1904 in St Louis, in the history of the sport.

Rio is four hours behind Ireland.

EURO SCHOOLBOYS SQUAD WIND DOWN TRAINING WEDNESDAY

The European Schoolboys Championship  Squad finished up their penultimate days training in the High Performance Gym at the National Boxing Stadium today.

They also saw off Olympic bound boxers Joe Ward, David Oliver Joyce and Head Coach Zaur Antia – pictured above with the Schoolboy squad at the National Stadium – as they left for their own pre-olympic training camp in Rio.

The schoolboys complete their training at 12:30pm on Wednesday before heading home and they will meet up again on Friday morning at 9:30am in Terminal 1, at Dublin Airport.

Boxers are advised to limit their suitcase to 15kg and have a small carry on bag with their essential boxing gear – boots, groinguard, wraps, 16oz sparring gloves, a headguard and gumshield.

The 2016 European Schoolboy Championships begin Sunday in Zagreb, Croatia.
