It was amazing to see Dun Laoghaire town centre packed out with all these boys & girls in their representative club tracksuits. Every Hotel/B&B/Guesthouse was booked out well in advance, all the local restaurants/bars had an upsurge in custom from the boxing event.

The planning of the event has been ongoing since its previous event last July. All of the 45 people working at the event are doing so on a voluntary basis. The club has set up 2 separate committee’s to help deal with the amount of entries. In its 4 year existence now and has grown from Year1: 75 boxers, Year2: 300 Boxers, Year3: 500 Boxers and now in its 4th Year: 920 boxers.

In particular the committee would sincerely like to thank their sponsors Globalmedics.com, DLRCC (Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council), IABA (Irish Athletic Boxing Assoc.) and Holy Child Community School Sallynoggin.

There is no doubt there will be an upsurge in boys & girls wanting to join the club, with many parents asking how can their kids join, and where the local clubs are situated.

MOYLETTE ADMITS HE’S HUMBLED BY SUPPORT

Ray Moylette

Ray Moylette

Former European Elite and AIBA World Youth champion Ray Moylette has admitted that he’s heartbroken that his Olympic dream is over.

But the Mayo light welterweight said that he is humbled by the support of his family, club and coaches, the IABA High Performance Unit and friends.

Moylette was beaten by Armenia’s Hovhannes Backov over three rounds at the final Olympic qualifiers in Vargas, Venezuela last night in a fiery last-eight clash.

The top three light-welters in Latin America qualify for next month’s Olympics and Backov is now just one win away from the 31st Olympiad.

Irish boxing wishes him the best of luck in his quest.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow, said Moylette.

“I was man enough to take on the challenge so I am man enough to accept the outcome. I’m heart broken but I know everything will be alright.

“Thank you very much to my team here in Venezuela, Martin Brennan and Eddie Bolger, who really sacrificed everything for me. My preparation was spot on and I never felt stronger.. The two lads made everything easy for me and I can’t thank them enough for all they have done.

“This whole journey couldn’t be possible without the help of my own boxing club in Westport, St Anne’s BC, the High Performance Unit and The IABA. I want to thank everyone involved who made it possible for me to chase my dream,

“I want to especially thank Zaur Antia and John Conlan who went out of their way to help me along with my own club coaches Martin Brennan, Peter Mullen, Tom Moran, Paul Mullen and Michael Burke.

“I’ve had massive support in my boxing career to date, and I’m truly grateful for all the well wishes and the words of encouragement. I had a whole nation in my corner and I’m humbled to say the least.

“Thanks to all my friends and family who made it possible over the years for me to train and fight at the top level, I am the foot soldier in the ring but my team always have my back.

“I have a great family, great friends, great girlfriend Sharon and a great future ahead.

“It’s time now to set new dreams and targets as I move on with my life. I really enjoyed the whole experience of chasing the Olympic rings in Rio and I’m glad I could Share it with you all.

“Thanks to my mother Mary Moylette and my sister Shiela Moylette for all the prayers along the way. I hope they haven’t gone to waste and they can guide me on my next adventure.”

MOYLETTE BOWS OUT IN VENEZUELA

The Armenian took all frames of the quarter-final 10-9 on all cards to score a 30-27 decision.

Moylette found the target with big rights at the start of the first and on the bell for the end of the round, but Backov, who lost out in a box-off for Rio in Turkey earlier this year, was working fluently from head to body throughout the frame.

The action moved up close and very personnel in the second with both men detonated solid uppercuts, Backov stepping back to fire in body shots, Moylette returning the compliment with head shots.

The St Anne’s BC (Mayo) man need a massive third to overturn the 20-18 deficit, but with the action more or less replicating the second, albeit at a slower pace, the durable Armenian earned another 10-9 stanza to seal a close but deserved win.

Moylette, as always, gave it everything, but hopes of a Venezuelan hat-trick – Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan (Conlan qualified again at the World Championships) qualified for Rio in the Latin American country through the World Series of Boxing  – wasn’t to be.

“It was always going to be tough, the Armenian had built a good foundation of activity throughout the qualifiers and over the Olympic cycle. This was the difference. It was an opportunity and Ray gave it his best,” said Irish coach Eddie Bolger.

The opening day of the final Olympic qualifiers in Vargas, Venezuela didn’t go exactly as planned for professional boxers in front of 4,000 spectators at the Jose Maria Vargas Dome.

The tournament is open to prize fighters. If they meet the qualification standard in Latin America they can compete at next month’s Olympic Games for the first time in the history of the sport.

World Series of Boxing (WSB) and AIBA Pro Boxers (APB) fighters are also eligible for Vargas.

Yesterday’s action saw Serbian pro Geard Ajetovic drop a unanimous decision to WSB fighter Raul Sanchez of the Dominican Republic and Egypt’s APB super-heavy Ahmed Samir Abdelmoaz Hefny edge Aruba’s Evan Nedd on a split verdict.

Sanchez floored Ajetovic twice in the last round.

In the third and final bout on the program, Rostyslav Arkhypenko of the Ukraine beat Brandon Lynch of the USA in an all WSB super-heavy duel.

Eighteen bouts will be decided today in Vargas. Ray Moylette will be in quarter-final action at approximately 9.30pm (Irish time) tonight.

The St Anne’s bC light-welter needs to finish in the top three to qualify for Rio. If he wins tonight he’ll get two shots at Olympic qualification, as the finalists qualify automatically and the beaten semi-finalists box-off for third place.
