The Ulster High Performance team celebrated a high five in Russia yesterday with all five boxers winning on the opening day of competition at a Youth tournament.

Liam Glennon, Barry McReynolds, Edgar Vuskans, Anthony Johnston and Kane Tucker had their hands raised in victory in Rostov.

The Ulster panel, who have put in a six-week training camp in Jordanstown ahead of their trip east, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and a number of Russian provincial sides are competing in Rostov.

Peter Brady is head coach and Stephen Friel team manager.

ULSTER HIGH PERFORMANCE SIDE IN ACTION IN RUSSIA TODAY

Most of the Ulster High Performance side are in action in Russia this afternoon at a top international Youth tournament.

Liam Glennon, Barry McReynolds, Edgar Vuskans, Anthony Johnston and Kane Tucker are between the ropes in Rostov on the shores Lake Nero, 202 kilometers northeast of Moscow.

Thomas Maughan received a bye.

IATBA NAME SQUAD FOR WORLD UNIVERSITY C’SHIPS

The Irish Athletic Third-Level Boxing Association have named an experienced squad for the World University Boxing Championships in Thailand.

Boxing begins on October 3 at Chaing Mai University.

Ceire Smith, a multiple Irish Elite champion, and current Irish Elite champion Christina Desmond line out at flyweight and middleweight in South East Asia.

Big Kenneth Okungbowa, a two-time Irish Elite finalist, competes at heavyweight,and Conor Wallace,also an Irish Elite finalist, and Irish U/23 champion Gary McKenna wear the middleweight and lightweight vests.

Eamonn O’Kane and Cathal McMonagle competed in the inaugural World University Championships in 2004 in Turkey. McMonagle reached the last-eight, the nearest an IATBA boxer has got to a medal at this level.

That’s a statistic that Smith, McKenna, Desmond, Wallace and Okungbowa will be looking to change at the 7th edition of the tournament next month.

The Ulster High Performance team arrived in Russia overnight for the multi-nation tournament with some of the world’s top nations.

The Russia, Ukraine and Uzbeks Youth sides, provincial squads and Ulster High Performance are slated to compete in Rostov.

The weigh-in for the tournament will take place tomorrow morning followed by boxing.

The Ulster panel have been through a six-week training camp in Jordanstown ahead of their trip east.

2016 Celtic Box Cup launch

Pat Ryan, President of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association, will officially open the Celtic Box Cup later this month.

The tournament, featuring top international and domestic boxers and clubs, begins on Friday, September 23 at the Dungarvan Sports Centre in  Waterford.

The 2016 Cup runs over three days and will be streamed live.

Celtic Box Cup founder Gerry O’Mahony, President of the Munster Council, said they were eagerly looking forward to the opening bell for the 4th edition of the Cup.
