Team Ireland Win A Record 8 European Youth Championship Medals.

Team Ireland’s Patsy Joyce contesting his quarter final/Bulgarian Boxing Federation

It was a record-breaking day for Team Ireland at the European Youth Championships in Sofia, Buglaria.

Going in to Day 6, 5 Irish boxers had qualified for their respective semi-finals and were guaranteed at least a bronze medal – Laura Moran, Georgia McGovern, Katie O’Keeffe, Cliona D’Arcy and Dearbhla Tinnelly. 6 Team Ireland boxers were in Quarter Final action today, and 3 will come home with podium finishes. The previous record medal haul by Team Ireland at a European Youth tournament was 7, although the path to history-making today was not a smooth one.

Controversy arose in Ring A’s bout 10, when Ireland’s Winne McDonagh boxed Yulha Filpova of Ukraine; she contested very strongly throughout her bout, but the decision was given to the Ukrainian, who was docked a point in the final round. The Team Ireland delegation appealed the award of the bout to Ukraine by three judges. . It’s been confirmed this evening by Team Manager, Anna Moore, that Ireland’s appeal was upheld by the review panel, and Winnie will claim at least bronze and will contest her semi final tomorrow.

48kg Patsy Joyce was dominant throughout his bout, Ukraine’s Vladislav Kondratuk of Ukraine and became the first Irish boxer of the day to win through to the semis. He’ll come home with at least a bronze medal.

Contesting at 67kg, Jim Donovan left it all in the ring in a battle with Kagan Kanlibilge of Turkey, and doesn’t progress by the narrowest of margins – a split decision. At 57kg, a similar fate befell John Donoghue in his contest against Marwan Mouflihi of France. John lost out on a 4-1 split decision.

At 66kg Gabrielle Monagan met a significantly taller opponent in her strongly contested quarter final in Maely Richols of France. The unanimous decision went to the French boxer

Team Co-Captain, Bobbi Flood, has also won through to his 71kg semi final, courtesy of a classy display in his contest against Mijan Cumac of Germany, which included a standing count in Round 2 for the German boxer
