Vetting Communication Season 2021/22

Dear Members,

Clubs are reminded that in accordance with Children First Act 2015 and National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012 all individuals with access to children under the age of 18 years must be Vetted prior to taking up positions in clubs.

This is a mandatory requirement and cannot be circumvented under any circumstances. In line with IABA policy, legal responsibility and best practice provisions, all members of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA), who regularly work with children and/or vulnerable adults in boxing, must complete the vetting process.

It is the responsibility of the clubs committee to ensure all volunteers with regular access to children and/or vulnerable adults have completed the vetting process before commencing in regulated positions/regulated activity (i.e., Coach, Children’s Officer or Volunteers who have regular access to children as part of their role).

Please note, volunteers cannot commence in a role where they have regular access to children and/or vulnerable adults in boxing while their vetting application is being processed. Such actions could potentially leave the club liable to penalties in the event of an incident.

For more information in relation to the IABA Vetting Process please see the link  to the IABA’s Vetting Policy – http://iaba.ie/site3/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/The-Irish-Athletic-Boxing-Association-Vetting-Policy-2018.pdf or contact the National Safeguarding Manager Declan Lynch at declan@iaba.ie.

Women’s Coaching Pathway

Applications are now open for the Women’s Coaching Pathway 2021. The Women’s Coaching Pathway is an exciting initiative for coaches and aspiring coaches. The programme gives participants the opportunity to improve their knowledge, expand their network and develop leadership and coaching skills in a supported, collaborative environment alongside coaches from Athletics Ireland, Cycling Ireland, Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA), Rowing Ireland and Triathlon Ireland.

In 2020, four NGBs partnered together to devise a supportive programme for Women in Coaching. The first year of the programme saw 25 female coaches from Rowing, Triathlon, Cycling and Boxing receive support in personal and professional development, mentorship, coach education and hands-on experience. The programme was successful in progressing coaches along the pathway and participants reported increased confidence, understanding of their coaching style and feeling part of a support network.

What’s Involved?

This year, with Athletics Ireland coming on board, we are taking in a new cohort of ambitious female coaches, looking to develop along the coaching pathway in their respective sport. Six coaches per sport will be selected to receive the following supports as part of the programme:

  • Personal Development Coaching Workshops with Jo Hopkins Consulting
  • Access to Coach Education
  • A trained Mentor
  • Multi sport networking opportunities
  • Support from their respective NGB’s Women in Sport Officers.

Triathlon Ireland, Rowing Ireland, Cycling Ireland, Athletics Ireland and the IABA all recognise the need to see more women in lead coaching positions in their sport and want to support coaches along that pathway.

How to Apply

If you have ambition to develop your coaching skills and are looking for a support network to help facilitate that ambition, please complete the application form and return it to louise.mckenzie@iaba.ie by September 20th 2021:
