BARNES CLAIMS GOLD IN MOSCOW

Paddy Barnes claimed light-flyweight gold at the 2010 European Elites in Moscow.

The three-time Irish Olympian beat Azeri puncher Elvin Mamishzade in the 48kg gold medal match at the Ice Palace in the Russian capital.

The top of the podium finish bridged a 19-year gap since Paul Griffin won European Elite gold in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1991.

Darren O’Neill, Tyrone McCullagh, Eric Donovan and Ken Egan took home silver and three bronze from Russia.

Combined with Barnes’ gold, the medal haul helped Ireland finish in 2nd spot in the medals table behind Russia.

OFFICER BOARD MEETING

    Dear members,

Following a meeting of the Officer Board this weekend, a decision was taken that all National Juvenile Championships and Competitions for the remainder of 2020 will now be cancelled.

This includes the National Junior competition and the National Boy/Girl 1, 2 and 3 Championships.

The decision was not taken lightly and following consultation with various stakeholders, the Health and Safety of our juvenile members was paramount, and hence the cancellation.

The National U-22's, which cater for adult boxers, will still provisionally go ahead, starting on November 6th.

The National Elite Championships will take place from 11th - 15th January, 2021 and hopefully if the Covid-19 virus has been curtailed, we can then get back to a 'normal' calendar of boxing.

    Kind Regards,

    Paddy Gallagher
    National Secretary

AIBA CONGRESS

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) Ordinary Congress 2020 will be held on December 12-13 on the virtual platform. The Executive Committee took this decision during the extraordinary meeting by the video conference on Wednesday.

AIBA Interim President Dr Mohamed Moustahsane wrote a letter to all the National Federations in advance asking their opinion on the upcoming Congress format. The majority of the members agrees that virtual event is the best solution in the current pandemic circumstances.

‘Today we decided to conduct our next Congress virtually. We also chose to use LUMI as a technical system for voting. This system was already utilized by several International Federations including IOC and ASOIF,’ addressed Dr. Moustahsane to the EC members.

‘I am sure that this decision is the most appropriate in the current circumstances. We will take the best experience of our colleagues to make this Congress a success,’ he added.
