BOY 1,2,3 CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDES AT STADIUM

The dust has settled on one of the most competitive Boy 1,2,3 Championships at the National Stadium in many seasons.

Fifty four National Boy 2 and 3 champions – less than 24 hours after the Boy 1 champions received their gold medals – were crowned at the home of Irish boxing today.

Kai Griffin completed a hat-trick for the Drimnagh BC, who reached three finals and won all three, versus St Paul’s BC stand out Shane Quinn earlier today, with Jake Kelleher, who claimed the first title on offer at the Championships last night, and Aaron Keogh taking home Boy 1 victory certs for the famed Dublin unit last evening.

Galway’s Olympic BC took their haul for the season to 9 Irish titles – and four from these Championships from six finalists. Owen Cleary, Martin Barrett, Jamie Barrett and Jonathan Delaney went all the way at the home of Irish boxing.

”They’ve been preparing for this since last October really and you couldn’t ask for anything more from the boys this week, said Olympic BC head coach Mike Mongan, also an Irish coach.

“We had seven in the semi-finals, six in the finals and we won four and lost two on split decisions. All the boys gave it everything.”

Dublin’s Avona BC also left a big calling card at IABA headquarters after claiming four gold medals from five finals. Roy Colgan, Martin McDonagh, Barney McDonagh and Lee McEvoy topped their respective podiums after a four-star showing.

Dominic O’Rourke, President of the IABA, congratulated all boxers, clubs, coaches and staff for what he described as a top class and memorable tournament.

Two hundred and seventy one bouts – just over 54 per day – were decided over five consecutive days since Tuesday.

Boxing began with the Boy 2 finals at 11am this morning.

BOY 1 FINALS (& BOY 3 SEMIS) DECIDED AT STADIUM

The first Boy champions of 2019 were crowned amid a tremendous atmosphere at the Boy 1 finals at the National Stadium tonight.

Twenty six potential 2028 Olympians claimed gold at the home of Irish boxing.

Dominic O’Rourke, President of the IABA, hailed the performances of Ireland’s talented young finalists at the South Circular Road venue.

“Brilliant performances from all the young boxers here tonight and congratulations to all concerned, the clubs, coaches and staff on a tremendous evening of boxing,” he said.

Cork boxing legend, Maurice Walsh of the St Colman’s BC, presented the medals following a cracking 43kg three-rounder featuring Leeside’s Alex Carmody and Dublin’s Lee Brennan.

Dublin’s Drimnagh BC, Galway’s Olympic BC and  Meath’s Ratoath BC took home two titles each.

The Boy 2 and Boy 3 – the semi-finals of which were completed today – finals will be decided tomorrow at the Stadium. Boxing begins at 11am on Saturday morning.

The weigh-ins will be held between 8m and 9am at the Stadium.

The IABA wishes all athletes the very best of luck in Saturday’s finals.

The tournament will be completed over 271 bouts over five consecutive days following Saturday’s deciders.

April 25 – Ciaran Kirwan, pictured above, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association Limited (the “IABA”) replacing Joe Christle. Joe has announced his intention to step down having served a 4-year term as Chairman and before that 4 years as a board member.

Christle, a former Irish Senior Heavyweight Boxing champion, has overseen significant changes in the IABA including the adoption of a new Rule Book, achieving a robust governance rating from external stakeholders,  the full implementation of the recommendations of the Review that followed the Rio Olympics, as well the establishment of the new High-Performance Training Centre at the National Sports Campus.

Kirwan has been a Director of the IABA since 2015. He is a qualified solicitor and is Managing Partner of Margetson and Greene solicitors. As a member of the Board, Kirwan has also played a role in the recent changes to the governance of the IABA.

The Board of the IABA is currently comprised of seven individuals, four of whom are elected members nominated from the Central Council of the IABA with the remaining three being independent board members appointed by the outgoing Chairman based on the skills and experience required by the Board. As part of our proposed evolution of the memorandum and articles of association, new members of the board will go through a HR & nominations committee. The committee will  propose new members for election to the membership in line with a skills criteria.

Speaking following his election as Chairman, Ciaran Kirwan said: “It is a huge honour to take over as Chairman of the IABA having been engrossed by the sport since a young age. I do however want to acknowledge the immense contribution that Joe Christle has made to the IABA during his time as Chairperson, sometimes in challenging circumstances whilst also balancing personal and professional demands. A former national champion Joe was driven by a real passion for boxing.

“There is no doubt that both the IABA and the sport of boxing is better for his input. He leaves a lasting legacy and I look forward continuing his efforts, working in partnership with the IABA President, Dominic O’Rourke, Central Council and our CEO, Fergal Carruth and the entire staff, to further build on our legacy as Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport whilst increasing the opportunity for people right around the country to get involved in amateur boxing.”
