ENGLAND VERSUS IRELAND RESULTS FROM NEWCASTLE

Team Ireland impressed in today’s today’s 17 bout Junior international with England at the Grainger ABC in Newcastle.

Ireland won 10-7 over 17 bouts.

Dylan Eagleson got Ireland off to a solid start with victory over Frank Varey but Breda Quilligan was edged on a 3-2 split to Shelby Maria Lee, both in the pinweight class.

The afternoon continued in a similar see-saw vein with  Michael Donoghue, Chloe Gabriel, Donagh Keary, Aalyiah Butler, Patrick Donovan, Thomas King, Winnie McDonagh, Eoghan Lavin and Brittany Stokes recording wins for Ireland.

Team Ireland were using the bulk of the champions from last month’s Open Cadet Championships in Dublin.

Ireland and England, who finished in the top three in the medals table at the 2018 European Junior Championships, are preparing for next month’s European Juniors in Romania and IABA President Dom O’Rourke believes that today’s international was ideal in the build up to the tournament.

“Tremendous performances all round from the entire Irish squad against a very talented England team here today, he said.

“All of the bouts were very close and congratulations to all concerned in a very well matched meeting. This is a stepping stone toward for the Europeans, that’s what it is all about.”
