DOUBLE BLOW FOR IRELAND AT EUROPEAN U/22s

Adam Hession was beaten on a unanimous decision by Rotyslav Bilototskyi of Ukraine in the last eight of the European U/22 Championships in Vladikavkaz, Russia today.

Neither flyweight dominated the three rounder. Hession backed up his busy opponent in the first and responded well after soaking up right hook at the start of the second with three shots of his own.

Both men received public warnings for dropping their heads in a lively but untidy 52kg contest.

The third round was more or less a replica of frame one and two, but the Ukrainian began to lose momentum after getting the warning. However, his hand was raised in victory. Final scores 28-27 x 4 and 29-26 to Bilototskyi.

Earlier today, Gabriel Dossen was retired by the Irish corner in the third round versus Russia’s Aleksei Semykin in the middleweight class.

The Irish male captain won the first round 3-2 but was down twice late in the second and third for right and lefts hooks and took counts.

Dossen took another count from a short left in the third and the Irish corner threw in the towel with just under a minute to go in the final frame.

Scores at end of second round – 19-19,19-18 and 20-18,19-19,20-17 to Semykin.

The Russian middle, who was beaten by Michael Nevin – who Dossen beat in last month’s Irish Elite final – in the 2014 European Junior final in Russia, is now guaranteed at least bronze and  meets Dmytro Rybalkov of the Ukraine in the last four.

“Not the day we hoped for but this team of boxers have given everything they could, said Irish team manager Stephen Molloy.

“The experience will be invaluable going forward in their careers. We have seen some fantastic-performances and have Amy Broadhurst to look forward to in the semi finals.”

Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst is the only Irish boxer left in the 34-nation tournament.

The Louth southpaw, the 2018 European U/22 lightweight champion, is guaranteed at least bronze in Russia and will be aiming to upgrade the colour of that medal to at least silver versus France’s Fatia Benmessahel on Friday.

Broadhurst, the current Irish Elite light welter champion who has dropped down a weight for Vladikavkaz, has an extra incentive to reach Sunday’s (March 17) 60kg final as she celebrates her birthday on St Patrick’s Day.

BROADHURST ADVANCES, EARLEY AND O’ROURKE BOW OUT AT EURO U/22s

Amy Broadhurst guaranteed herself a second successive medal at the European U/22 Championships in Vladikavkaz,Russia today.

The Dundalk lightweight, a gold medallist at the 2018 European U/22s, beat Hungary’s Kinga Mezovari in today’s 60kg quarter-final and will be taking home at least bronze.

Broadhurst had her hand raised in victory on a unanimous decision after a delay in the announcement following what appeared to a computer glitch which required the ref to collect the scores from the five judges on paper.

Mezovarai started brightly enough, but her enthusiasm was severely curbed inside the opening minute after she took a count from a short range combination from the Irish Elite light welter champion.

From that point on, Broadhurst’s backhand dominated the contest, with the occasional right hook thrown into the bargain.

“Amy was outstanding, in total control of the contest. What a back hand,” said Irish team manager Stephen Molloy.

Broadhurst will now meet France’s Fatia Benmessahel in the semi-finals on Friday.

Niamh Earley bowed out on a 4-1 split decision in the 51kg quarter-final versus Giovanna Marchese.

The Italian flyweight responded well to Earley’s attacks to take the first round on all cards and won an equally tight second frame 3-2.

Earley, with her opponent switching stances, landed three solid combinations in the third but the Italian puncher continued to counter going down the final stretch.

Aoife O’Rourke lost on a unanimous decision to Russian Anastasiya Shamonova, the current Olympic Youth and World and European Youth champion.

The final scores read 29-28 x 3 and 30-27 x 2 to the Russian, with O’Rourke enjoying a good start and finish to a very close middleweight contest.

Shamonova found the target with most of the solid shots, but a body to head combination from the Irish female captain impressed in the final frame.

O’Rourke followed that up with a sweeping right hook but Shamonova got the nod with at least  bronze up for grabs.

Irish male captain Gabriel Dossen and Adam Hession are in quarter-final action tomorrow.

DOSSEN ADVANCES BUT DONOVAN BOWS OUT AT EURO U/22s

Irish male captain Gabriel Dossen, pictured about today, turned on the style to book his ticket into the last eight at the European U/22 Championships in Vladikavkaz, Russia this afternoon.

But Limerick welter Paddy Donovan is out of the tournament after being adjudged to have lost on a unanimous decision to Russia’s Vakhid Abbasov.

Galway southpaw Dossen (Olympic BC) earned a number of 10-8 scores against Romanian middleweight Florin Simion, the current Irish Elite champion establishing control of the bout early on and finding the target with a wide variety of head and body shots in a commanding performance.

He’ll now meet Russia’s Aleksei Semykin on Wednesday with at least bronze up from grabs. Final scores versus Simion – 30-25,30-25,30-25,30-26,30-27.

Donovan (Our Lady of Lourdes BC) was involved in a tight encounter with Abbasov. The durable and industrious Russian worked well when he cut down the distance but Donovan, who mostly brought the fight to his opponent, found the target with the majority of shots in all three rounds.

Donovan received a public warning for hitting with the inside of the gloves in the first round and was docked a point. Final scores – 29-27,30-26,30-26,30-26,30-26.

Irish female captain Aoife O’Rourke, 2018 European U/22 champion Amy Broadhurst and Niamh Earley are in quarter-final action tomorrow one win each away from at least bronze.

O’Rourke meets Russia’s current Olympic Youth and World and European Youth champion Anastasiya Shamonova.
