HARRINGTON GUARANTEED BRONZE AT WORLD ELITES (UPDATED)

Kellie Harrington

Amy Broadhurst bowed out of the World Elite Championships on a split decision to India’s  Simranjit Baath Kaur in the light-welter class this afternoon.

The  finals scores read 28-28 and 29-27,30-26,29-27 to Kaur and 29-27 to Broadhurst.

The Dundalk soutphaw, who won the first round on the unofficial cards by virtue of a stunning left alone, continued to impress in the second with simple but effective one-two combinations, Kaur also had her moments in the middle of the frame and toward the end of the stanza.

Broadhurst dropped the Indian orthodox with what looked like a legitimate left in the third but the ref ruled that a slip. The third person in the ring then gave Broadhurst a public warning for hitting with the inside of the glove moments later.

The European U/22 champion left the ring in tears after the verdict was announced. Magnificent performance from Broadhurst who was making her World Elite debut in New Delhi..

Earlier today, Kellie Harrington guaranteed Ireland at least one bronze.

The Dublin lightweight beat Canada’s Caroline Veyre on a unanimous decision in this morning’s 60kg quarter-final  to take her place in Thursday’s semi-finals.

Harrington, a silver medallist at light-welter at the 2016 World Elites in Kazakhstan, has now won her second successive medal at this level.

The current Irish Elite champion, who got her shots off early and often in all three rounds against Veyre, an opponent she beat in the 2017 Celtic Box Cup final in Dungarvan in 2017, will meet Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova on Thursday for a place in Saturday’s lightweight final.

“We are very happy with Kellie. She was very calm and patient and it was a fantastic performance today,” said Irish head coach Zaur Antia.

Scores 29-28,29-28,29-28, 30-27,30-27 to Harrington.

IRELAND ARRIVE HOME FROM EU CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team Ireland arrived home from the EU Men’s Elite Championships in Valladolid, Spain via Dublin Airport today.

Kurt Walker claimed bantamweight gold at the tournament and Kieran Molloy brought home bronze.

Walker beat England’s current European Elite champion Peter McGrail in the 56kg final on a split decision in a repeat of this year’s Commonwealth Games final which the Liverpool southpaw won.

“I’m absolutely buzzing, couldn’t of done it without my coaches John and Eoin and my coaches back home. The tactics I was given were 100 percent,” said Walker after his victory.

Ireland were using a 7-strong squad in Spain. Stephen Molloy was Irish team manager and John Conlan and Eoin Pluck worked Ireland’s corner.

Irish boxing has won almost 50 medals at this level over the last 15 years.18 of the medals claimed are gold.

BROADHURST WINS BUT SMITH,O’ROURKE AND WALSH LOSE IN INDIA

Amy Broadhurst joined Kellie Harrington in Tuesday’s World Women’s Elite quarter-finals in New Delhi after posting an impressive win over Armenia this afternoon.

The Dundalk light-welter scored a unanimous decision over Ani Hovsepyan and will face India’s Kaur Baatth for at least bronze tomorrow.

Harrington meets Canadian lightweight Caroline Veyre, who she beat in the 2017 Celtic Box Cup final in Dungarvan, aiming for her second successive World Elite medal.

Meantime, Belfast feather Michaela Walsh lost on a 4-1 split verdict to Italy’s World Elite champion Alessia Mesiano, who Walsh beat earlier this year, after three close rounds in the 57kg class this afternoon. (Walsh versus Mesiano pictured below today)

Welsh middleweight Lauren Price advanced to the last eight  at the expense of Ireland’s Aoife O’ Rourke this morning. The current Commonwealth Games champion earned a unanimous decision after a close encounter in New Delhi.

O’Rourke, a silver medallist at the European U/22s, held the centre of the ring for most of the three rounds, worked hard and found the target with two big rights at the start of the second and third.

Price, a European Elite bronze medallist, impressed on the counter in all three rounds.

Earlier, Ceire Smith lost on a 3-2 split decision after it went back to the judges following  majority draw versus Japan’s Namiki Tukimi.

The Cavan flyweight countered well, particularly in rounds one and two, against the aggressive Asian.

Tukimi received a public warning for punching the Smith in the back of the head in the third.

The final scores read 28-28, 28-28,28-28 and 29-27,29-27 to Smith, but when it went back to the judges they sided with Tukimi on a 3-2 split.

“I was sure I actually had done enough. Gutted to be honest,” said Smith after the three-rounder.

Monday is the last day of preliminaries in New Delhi.

WALKER WINS GOLD IN SPAIN

Kurt Walker, pictured having his hand raised in victory tonight, is the new European Union Elite 56kg champion after a top drawer performance in Valladolid, Spain tonight.

The Antrim bantam beat England’s current European Elite champion Peter McGrail on a 3-2 split decision.

Talented Liverpool-native McGrail, a World Elite bronze medallist who beat Walker on a 4-1 split in the 2018 Commonwealth final, won the first round tonight, but Walker edged the second and ran away with the third to secure victory.

The fight was tight and tactically throughout, but as John Conlan, who is working Ireland’s corner in Spain with Eoin Pluck, explained, “Kurt stayed in the pocket and boxed brilliantly.”

Conlan also admitted that he was surprised with the split: “I thought he won every round,” he said.

The latter half of the third was all Walker with McGrail soaking up a succession of rights as he sought to close down the distance between himself and the Irishman.

Tonight’s win maintains Ireland’s proud tradition of having won gold at every EU championships since, and including, Dublin 2007.

Galway welterweight Kieran Molloy claimed bronze in Spain.

Irish team manager Stephen Molloy, father of Kieran, hailed tonight’s victory.

”Kurt was fantastic all thoughout the championships and was outstanding today, catching his opponent with superior shots. So delighted for Kurt, John, Eoin and all the team,” he said.

Irish squad in Spain

“A good day for both Irish boxing male and female teams, with a superb win for Kurt Walker getting the Gold medal at the EU Championships. Team has performed well overall. All building towards 2020,” said IABA High-Perfromance Director Bernard Dunne from New Delhi where the Irish squad are impressing with 6 wins from 7 so far at the World Women’s Elites.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home from Spain at 1.30pm via Dublin Airport tomorrow, November 19.

Walker won four fights in 9 days en route to gold.
