DOSSEN INTO FINAL AT EINDHOVEN BOX CUP

Gabriel Dossen (blue) tonight

Irish and Olympic BC coach Michael Mongan reckons that Gabriel Dossen is phenomenal in the Netherlands.

The Irish middleweight claimed his second victory in 24 hours at the Eindhoven Box Cup tonight after beating English international Ramtin Musah of the Beartown ABC.

The World Youth medallist, who beat Beijing Olympian Herry Saliku Biembe in the quarter-finals yesterday, earned on a unanimous decision to book his spot in the 75kg final.

“Excellent performance from Gabriel against a really tough England international. Gabriel started at high tempo from Round 1 catching his opponent with combinations, Round 2 was closer and Gabriel was phenomenal in Round 3,” said Mongan who is working Dossen’s corner with Johnny Myers.

Dossen is representing the Olympic BC in Eindhoven.

He’ll meet Dutch No.1 Max Van Der Par for gold tomorrow.

13 MEDALS GUARANTEED AT EUROPEAN JUNIORS

Irish boxing will be taking home at least 13 bronze medals from the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia.

The final count is in following the completion of the boys quarter-finals this afternoon.

Likewise, 13 medals – 9 female and 4 male – are in the bag, and, given the mood this determined young Irish team are in, awaiting an upgrade to at least silver or gold.

Jon O’Connell won his third bout in Anapa today on a unanimous decision over England’s Billy Adams shortly after Michael Donohoe scored a 4-0 victory over Jack Dryden, also of England.

Barry O’Connor saw off Walsh light-middle Scott Jones after a fiery clash to book his ticket into the last four on a day when once again the Irish squad and fans were the loudest at the venue.

Patrick Myers, in action in the last bout on today’s program, took approximately 75 seconds to join his compatriots in the business end of the tournament after forcing Matous Kasrviank into two standing counts in the first round. The contest was stopped after the second count.

Michael Maughan, Shane O’Brien, Irish (male) captain Jason Myers and Eoghan Lavin bowed out today after extremely close three-rounders. Big performances from all four boxers in contests which could have gone either way.

Sunday is a rest day in Anapa. The squad will have a training session in Anapa tomorrow morning at 11am.

The semi-finals and finals will be decided on Monday and Tuesday.

Team Ireland are scheduled to arrived home at 12 noon on Thursday via Dublin Airport.

IRELAND V WALES RESULTS FROM WEXFORD

Ireland came from behind to beat Wales 6-5 over 11 bouts in the first leg of a two-match international at a sold out Belfield GAA Club in Enniscorthy, Wexford.

World Junior medallist Niamh Early, European Schoolboy champion Michael Faulkner, Paddy Cleary, Callum Ruth, Ryan Cullen and Adam Hession had their hands raised in victory amid a tremendous atmosphere.

Tonight’s show was hosted and organised by the Sacre Coeur BC who thanked the Welsh boxing team and patrons for their support.

A presentation was made to the wife and family of Wexford boxing legend Bernard Dunne this evening.

Another Wexford boxing legend, ten-time Irish Elite champion Jim O’Sullivan, was at ringside supporting Team Ireland in a meeting which was in the balance right down to the final bout on the card.

Both nations meet again at the Youth Centre in New Ross tomorrow night on a St Mary’s BC hosted night of boxing.

Proceedings begin at 7pm with a ring parade.

GABRIEL DOSSEN BEATS AN OLYMPIAN IN EINDHOVEN

World Youth medallist Gabriel Dossen scored an impressive win over an Olympian at the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands tonight.

The Olympic BC middleweight beat Herry Saliku-Biembe on a unanimous decision in the last eight

Saliku-Biembe, who was representing the Swiss Boxing Team in Eindhoven, lined out for the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

”He boxed excellent and dealt with Biambe’s pressure in Round 1. Gabriel’s long reach, speed and movement was too much for his opponent from then on,” said Irish and Olympic BC coach Mike Mongan who is working Dossen’s corner with Johnny Myers.

Dossen will now face of Ramtin Musah of the Beartown ABC in England in the semi-finals tomorrow.

Musah, an English Elite international, edged Dossen on a split decision in a club show in Blackburn last May.
