SEMI-FINAL RESULTS – MINSK MULTI NATIONS

Kevin Sheehy and Martin Keenan had to settle for bronze at the Liventsev Memorial in Belarus.

The Limerick pair were beaten by Uladzislav Smiahlikau of Belarus and Serbia’s Vladan Baliach in the heavy and super heavy semi-finals.

Keenan, who beat French Rio Olympian and European U/22 champion Paul Omba in the last eight, lost on a unanimous decision.

Likewise with Sheehy after another close bout with Uladzislav Smiahlikau of Belarus.

Today’s defeats bring Ireland’s competitive interest in the tournament to a close.

Olympic champion Michael Carruth and Eoin Pluck are working Ireland’s corner in Minsk.

The Liventsev Memorial is being run as a dry run for the boxing event at next year’s multi-sport European Games in the Belarusian capital.

The Irish squad are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport on Sunday afternoon.

DAY 2 RESULTS – EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

John McConnell beat a two-time Continental champion in a career-best performance at the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia today.

The Irish flyweight, who also won yesterday, stunned Russia’s Evegeni Zhorov on a split decision to book his ticket into the quarter-finals.

Zhorov won gold at the 2016 European Schoolboys and completed his double after edging Ireland’s Patrick Donovan on a split decision in the 2017 European Schoolboy final in Romania.

Michael Donohoe, Michael Maughan and Shane O’Brien were also in top form en route to victory in Anapa this afternoon.

But Steve Cairns and Taylor Guiney bowed out despite big performances.

Irish team managers Anna Moore and Joe Hennigan said that the Team Ireland athletes gave it absolutely everything and hailed all six performances.

Meanwhile, the Girls in Green are within striking distance of the medals in Russia.

Five Irish schoolgirl champions and two boys will be in quarter-final and last 16 action tomorrow in another busy day for Irish boxing.

So far, after two days of boxing against the Continent’s finest, Ireland has won seven bouts out of ten, a 70% strike rate.

DAY 2 RESULTS – MINSK MULTI-NATIONS

Limerick heavyweight Kevin Sheehy guaranteed himself at least bronze at the Liventsev Memorial in Minsk, Belarus this afternoon.

But Jordan Moore and Brett McGinty bowed out at the last eight stage.

Sheehy convincingly Robertas Jakulys of Lithuania on a unanimous decision in the 91kg class.

Moore can consider himself to be very unlucky to have been on the wrong end of a 3-2 split to Kazakh bantam Bekzat Makzhan and the Brett McGinty and Giorgi Kharabadze three-rounder was in the balance right down to the final bell.

In the evening session, James McGivern lost after his fight with Italian light-welter Paolo di Lernia was stopped in the second round after the Irishman suffered a facial cut from what appeared to be a clash of heads. The ref ruled that it was a punch. McGivern was 4-1 up on the judge’s cards from  the first frame.

Martin Keenan won his second bout in 24 hours on a 4-1 decision over tough French super-heavy Paul Omba to join his fellow Shannonsiders Sheehy in the last four and assure himself of at least bronze.
