MIXED FORTUNES ON DAY 2 AT WORLD YOUTHS

Daina Moorehouse, pictured above with Brandon McCarthy, advanced to the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Men’s and Youth Championships in Hungary this afternoon.

The current European Youth champion beat Spain’s Marta Lopez Del Arbol in Budapest to record Ireland’s first win of the tournament.

Moorehouse won on a 4-1 split decision in a repeat of the European Youth quarter-final which the Andalucía light-fly lost to the Bray woman in Italy earlier this year.

Moorehouse will now meet Thailand’s  Nillda Meekoon on Sunday with at least bronze up for grabs.

Earlier today, Brandon McCarthy bowed out at the last 32 stage this morning.

The Kildare bantamweight lost on a unanimous decision to India’s Kumar Akash after an entertaining 56kg clash.

McCarthy drove home big shots in all three frames, two sweeping hooks in the opening exchanges, solid rights at the end of the second and a fine uppercut in the third were the pick of his punches.

But the judges went for the relentless aggression, punch volume and work ethic of Akash. Finals scores – 30-27,30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28.

Caitlin Fryers, a bronze medallist at the 2017 World Youths, and Irish male captain Jude Gallagher are in action tomorrow versus Thailand and China.
