EUROPEAN SCHOOLBOY/GIRL C’SHIPS RESULTS – 2ND SESSION

Irish boxers in action today

Tyler Meade and Curtis Darcy improved Ireland’s medal haul at the European Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Championships in Albena, Bulgaria this afternoon.

But there was disappointment for Ryan Murphy, Joe Hutchinson and Patrick McDonagh who lost out at the last-eight stage.

Meade was on top again durable Serb, Milo Tibic, and Darcy dominated against Romania’s Malyas Nagyos, the only surprise being his margin of  victory – an eyebrow-raising 4-1 split.

“Tyler was very good against a tough boy. He used his backhand very well today, said Irish (male) manager Martin Fennessey. “Great win also for Curtis. All the boys gave it everything against talented opponents.”

Earlier on Friday, Irish boxing hit the magic 100 mark, courtesy of James Donovan. The Limerick flyweight, who boxes out of the Our Lady of Lourdes Boxing Club, beat Bulgaria’s Dzhem Demirev on a unanimous decision to book his ticket into the last-four.

The boys in green will be back in the medal hunt against tomorrow with five athletes slated for the quarter-finals. The girls in green will be looking to upgrade their guaranteed bronze to at least silver in Saturday’s semi-finals.

100 EUROPEAN MEDALS – AND COUNTING

James Donovan and Irish (male) Team Manager Martin Fennessey today

Irish boxing hit the magic 100 mark at the European Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Championships today after James Donovan nailed at least bronze in Albena, Bulgaria.

The Limerick flyweight, who boxes out of the Our Lady of Lourdes BC, showed his class to beat Bulgaria’s Dzhem Demirev on a unanimous decision to book his ticket into the last-four.

Earlier, Dublin’s John Fay guaranteed himself at least bronze after holding his composure and consistently picking off his shots against Mikita Harbuz of Belarus who received a public warning for dropping his head in the second round.

Today’s double, combined with the nine medal the Irish girls team are assured of in Albena, combined with the 89 medals that Ireland has won since the inaugural European Schoolboy Championships in Rome in 2003, takes the all-time total to 100 in 15 years of boxing at this level.

Some of the greats of Irish boxing, including Rio Olympian and three-time European champion Joe Ward and two weight-World pro champion Carl Frampton, contributed to the total with silver medal wins at Portsmouth 2007 and Rome 2003.

IABA President Dominic O’Rourke, Irish team managers Jennifer O’Sullivan and Martin Fennessey and coaches hailed the historic milestone.

Meantime, the search for medal 101 – and more – continues this afternoon with five athletes between the ropes. Boxing begins at 3.30pm (Irish time).

Michael Connors was the first Irish boxer in action today. Connors found the target with enough hooks to suggest that he could have got the decision against Caider Abduraimov but the judges opted for the talented Ukrainian after three close rounds.

IRELAND VERSUS INDIA

Kieran Molloy will be aiming to maintain his impressive start to 2018 with a big performance against India in Mayo.

The Oughterard BC welterweight and current Irish Elite champion has been named on an 11-strong Irish male squad to meet the Asian kingpins at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on Saturday.

India finished in 2nd spot in the medal table at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia and in 3rd place at the 2017 Asian Championships in Uzbekistan.

Kieran Molloy

“Preparations are great,  said Galway-native Molloy who also scooped the Best Male Boxer Award at February’s Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium and followed that up with wins over Freudis Rojas Jnr. and Quinton Randall of the USA in Ireland’s three-match away meeting with America in March.

“We’ve been in Dublin for the past seven weeks training hard and learning all the time. I’m looking forward to the test against India as they’re a strong side.

“I’m sure there will be some great fights on the night. It’s also good that they are holding an international in the West of Ireland and I’m sure Castlebar will draw a crowd,” added the former AIBA World Junior medallist.

Kurt Walker

Antrim bantamweight Kurt Walker claimed Commonwealth silver in Australia earlier this year and European Elite bronze in 2017 and wants to build on that momentum.

“I’m looking to get a good few rounds in against India. They’re a strong boxing nation and they have a lot of strength in depth, he said.

“My performances were getting better as I went along (at Commonwealth Games). I just missed out in the final but I felt that I could have beat him. I’m happy enough with where I’m at at the minute and where I’m going.”

With Tokyo 2020 on the horizon, Bernard Dunne, IABA High-Performance Director, has one eye on the qualifiers for the 32nd Olympiad.

The former WBA super-bantamweight and Irish Elite champion believes that India is a world class boxing nation.

He said: “We see the India meeting as an opportunity to develop our athletes and test them against a team who regularly qualify for major tournaments.

“We’re very fortunate that we’ve got numerous athletes in each weight division that can compete on the international stage. We’re developing toward (Tokyo) 2020 so our younger athletes can gain international experience.

“I don’t have any doubts about the strength of the opposition. India is a quality team as they’ve proven with past results. We’re looking to test ourselves against a quality boxing nation in Mayo.

“I am very impressed with the new boxing academy at Lough Lannagh, not just the gym itself, but the facilities surrounding it. Castlebar is the ideal location to host such a major event and it can only be good for Mayo,” he added.

Bernard Dunne

“Boxing is huge in Mayo and I have no doubt it will get great support and I believe we will be seeing a lot more of these major international tournaments coming to Castlebar where the faicilities are just superb, the TF Royal Theatre in particular proving to be an ideal venue for such an event.”

Tickets for the Ireland versus India Elite international
are priced at €10 for adults and €5 for U/15s.

DAY 3 RESULTS – EUROPEAN SCHOOLBOY/GIRL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cork’s Michael Faulkner and Dublin’s Martin Collins progressed to the last-eight of the European Schoolboy & Schoolgirl Championships in Bulgaria this afternoon.

But Feidhlim Behan and Conor Donovan were shaded on split decisions in the last 16 in Albena

Faulkner exhibited his class to see off Georgia’s Gocha Gordulava, the Leesider showcasing good combinations and footwork to take all three rounds.

Drimnagh pocket rocket Collins was involved in a see-saw three-rounder with rangy Belarusian Anton Salika, the Dubliner taking a majority of judges with him to seal a well-deserved victory.

An open and clean contest saw Ukraine’s Tymofii Krupko edge a 4-1 split over Behan who found the target with crisp shots in all three rounds.

Donovan, the last Irish athlete in action today, appeared to have done enough versus Hungary’s but the split went against the Clonmel BC and Ireland pin-weight.

Overall, Team Ireland won seven of eleven  bouts today on another hectic afternoon and early evening for the Irish coaches, staff and vociferous fans by the banks of the Black Sea.

The last 16 phase of the tournament is now complete.

Eight – all male – Irish athletes are in action tomorrow looking to claim at least bronze while the remaining Irish female panel will be aiming to upgrade their guaranteed bronze to at least silver in Saturday’s semi-finals.

Ireland’s female stars won five bouts earlier today and Irish boxing will be bringing home at least nine bronze medals for the 16th edition of the competition.
