MCGARRIGLE BACK BETWEEN THE ROPES AT COMMONWEALTHS

Ben McGarrigle, pictured, heads back to the future next Friday when he travels to Australia as one of the panel of Referees and Judges (R&Js) for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The 21st edition of the tournament officially begins on April 4 on the Gold Coast.

The R&Js are scheduled to take part in a two-day AIBA seminar ahead of the commencement of boxing on April 5.

The wheel will turn full circle for McGarrigle Down Under as 20 years ago he was with the Irish squad at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A Strabane-native and Omagh Boys Club standout, McGarrigle reached the Commonwealth quarter-finals two decades ago.

“That’s me back at the Commonwealth Games twenty years to the year that I boxed in them in Kuala Lumpur. I’m delighted to repeat history,” said McGarrigle who officiated at the 2017 AIBA World Elite Championships in Hamburg.

“I boxed the Welsh man Kevin Evans (Evans was beaten in the semi-finals by Canada’s eventual champion, Mark Simmons) in the quarter-finals, I got an accidental cut in the first round whilst ahead on points and the doctor stopped it. That was as for at least a bronze. Today’s rules are different, it would go to points,” added the AIBA 3-Star R&J.

Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland squad are in Australia in training camp in Canberra.

Current Irish and EU Elite champion Michaela Walsh  will be aiming to go one better than the 2014 Commonwealths in Glasgow where she was edged out on a split decision by two-time Olympic champion Nicola Adams in the 51kg final.

“We have the talent, that’s something boxing has always been very lucky with, having that conveyor belt of talent coming through all the time, head coach John Conlan told the Irish News.

“As they’ve gone on they’ve supported each other, they’ve gone through the journey. They’ve bonded as a team. We’ve created a really good environment to train and learn.”

Northern Ireland topped the boxing medals table at the 2010 Commonwealths in New Delhi and finished 2nd in the medals table in Glasgow four years later.

An impressive haul of 14 medals – five of which were gold –  were won at both tournaments.

IRISH SQUAD ARRIVES HOME FROM USA

Irish Elite champion Wayne Kelly, pictured, believes the three bouts he got under his belt in the USA are all part of the learning process on the road to the 32nd Olympiad.

The Irish squad, under head coach Zaur Antia and staff, arrived home from America early this morning after their three-match meeting with the Stars N’ Stripes in Boston, Springfield and Manchester, New Hampshire.

Kelly, who boxes out of the Portlaoise BC, beat Adrian Benton to end the tour on a high note with both sides claiming four wins apiece in New Hampshire.

Kelly, Kellie Harrington Kieran Molloy and Caoimhin Ferguson had their hands raised in victory in Manchester.

“I am happy with how the experience went, first time fighting in the States and I had three competitive fights with world class operators, said Kelly.

“This is all a learning curve and I am growing as an elite boxer and I can’t wait to keep improving and learning.

“That is my aim for this year. With next year being Olympic qualifier year I want to  be the best boxer I can be and win European and World medals to reach my dream, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”

Bernard Dunne, IABA High-Performane Diector and team manager in the USA, hailed the performances of the Irish team against the Americans.

Both nations met 30 times in the three-match tour.Fifteen of the bouts were decided on split decisions.

IRELAND AND USA DRAW IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Irish and USA squads in training camp in Boston

The USA and Ireland shared the spoils in the final edition of their three-match international series in Manchester, USA tonight.

Both nations won four contests apiece at the Manchester Downtown Hotel.

Kellie Harrington, Wayne Kelly, Caoimhin Ferguson and Kieran Molloy had their hands raised in victory for the visitors.

The eight-bout meeting, replicating last week’s encounters in Springfield and Boston, was close throughout with five split decisions separating the contestants on a see-saw evening in New Hampshire.

Overall, 50% of the 30-bout St Patrick’s festival treble-header finished on split verdicts.

Harrington boxed well within herself to take her second victory of the tour, and a second win over New York’s Stacia Suttles, while Aoife Burke, who took a standing count from a body shot in the second, finished strong versus eventual victor Leah Cooper.

Francis Cleary was unlucky not to get the nod against James Browning at lightweight. Browning won the first, courtesy of a flashing hook on the ten-second clapper, but Cleary found the target with three sweeping lefts and a crisp combination going down the final stretch following an even second stanza.

Wayne Kelly, who had two split decision go against him last week, deservedly won this evening versus Adrian Benton to level the match at 2-2 and Caoimhin Ferguson edged the visitors ahead for the first time on the tour at the expense of Charlie Sheehy, the Antrim light-welter putting in massive final round to impress two of the three judges.

Molloy detonated some big backhands in rounds two and three in his all-southpaw meeting with Freudis Rojas Jr. to ensure that Ireland could not be beaten on the night.

Nikita Ababiy and Richard Torrez claimed the final two wins after tight encounters with Gerard French and Dean Gardiner to level the match at 4-4.

The Paddy Donovan versus Quinton Randall three-rounder, which would have been a repeat of last Thursday’s meeting in Springfield which Donovan won, was off after the Limerick southpaw picked up an illness.

“Performances have been excellent over the duration of the trip. It has been very worthwhile working with Team America and we are extremely happy,” said IABA High-Performance Director Bernard Dunne, the Irish team manager in the USA.

The Irish squad are due to arrive home Friday morning via Dublin Airport.
