After years of planning, and an investment of hundreds of thousands of Euro, Monkstown Boxing Club’s premises has finally opened.
The club, which is home to Paris Olympian Jack Marley, High Performance boxer Sean Mari, and multiple Dublin, Leinster & National champions and underage international athletes, has been housed on the upper floors of Mounttown Community Facility since 2010.
The club house includes changing facilities, kitchen, toilets & medical room, as well as two full-size rings, 8 bags and additional floor space.
The sod was turned on the building in January 2024, and the club will begin training there this week.
The facility, built on the car park of Mounttown Community Centre which currently houses the club, is a collaborative Part 8 project between Monkstown Boxing Club and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council Council. Construction was supported by the award of €150,000 to Monkstown BC under the Sports Capital Grant programme in 2022.
This Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council artist’s rendering of the inside of the club house shows the training space on the left, and entrance and utility spaces on the right.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Jim O’Leary, CEO Frank Curran and Monkstown Boxing Club’s JP Kinsella officiated at today’s opening ceremony, which was also attended by Dublin County Board President, Art O’Brien, National Secretary, Tara Robins Mari, and National Development Manager James Geraghty.
