The Glen Boxing Club received the red carpet treatment at a civic reception at City Hall, Cork last evening.

The club, one of the oldest in the country, are this year celebrating their Centenary 1916 – 2016.

The reception was hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Chris O’Leary, who referred to the club as an institution in Irish sporting folklore and a credit to the Irish Athletic Boxing Association.

The Lord Mayor said he was both delighted and honoured to welcome the club to City Hall.

Cork’s First Citizen was thanked by Glen BC President Mick O’Sullivan and Chairman Anthony Connolly.

The President of the Cork County Board, Mick O’Brien, said Cork Boxing was proud of the Glen Boxing Club and their outstanding contribution to the sport on Leeside and at national level.

O Brien, who called on IABA to honour the club, added: “The Glen BC have been great ambassadors for amateur boxing and this is a very special year for a great club who have stood the test of time.”
