Ireland’s top boxers will be aiming to join Stephen McKenna in the National Elites finals over the next 24 hours at the National Stadium in Dublin.

McKenna, who is making his Elite debut, received a bye into the light-fly decider and will meet either Regan Buckley or Daryl Moran in the 49kg final this day week.

McKenna brought the curtain down on his impressive underage career with a silver medal win at the European Youth Championships in Poland last weekend.

Buckley and Moran get the weekend’s semi-finals underway this evening.

John Joyce and Fearghus Quinn open tonight’s card in the remaining middleweight quarter-final to be resolved. The winner meets defending champion and European Games gold medallist Michael O’Reilly tomorrow night.

The first session of weigh-ins took place at the National Stadium this morning. There will be a further session between 12pm and 1pm today.

Former European Schoolboy and Junior champion John Joyce gets the weekend’s Elite Championships underway with a last-eight clash against Camlough BC prospect Fearghus Quinn on Friday night.

Joyce, one of the three St Michael’s Athy BC boxers in action Friday, signed off on his underage career with a bronze medal win at the European Youth Championships in Poland last weekend.

Willie Donoghue, like Joyce a bronze medal winner at the European Youths, also make his Elite debut this weekend.

The ex World Junior champion meets European Games silver medallist and AIBA World No. 7 Brendan Irvine. Irvine won his first Elite belt at light-fly last January but has moved up to flyweight.

Kurt Walker is the first defending champion in action this weekend versus Cork bantam Colin O’Donovan.

Dean Gardiner has received a walkover at the National Elite Championships.

The Tipperary super-heavy, the defending champion, was due to meet Damien Sullivan in the 91kg+ semi-final on Friday evening.

But the Clonmel BC man, who was selected by the World Series of Boxing side Puerto Rico Hurricanes in the foreign boxers draft in Switzerland this week, now awaits the winner of Saturday’s clash between Thomas Carty and Constantin Popivicu.

The last-four of the Elite Championships will be decided this Friday and Saturday to pave the way for the December 11th finals. Boxing begins at 7.30pm on both nights.

Semi-final – and one quarter-final – weigh in times – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm on Friday and Saturday.
