London 2012 Olympian and defending heavyweight champion Darren O’Neill progressed to the last-four of the National Elite Championships at the National Stadium tonight.

The Kilkenny southpaw beat Stephen Lawrence on a unanimous decision in the 91kg class.

Jason McKay, Eddie Byrne, Conor Wallace and John Paul Delaney also won this evening, Delaney edging former 81kg finalist Matthew Tinker on a split, while Stephen McMonagle and Kiril Afansev decisioned Ciaran Griffin and Christy Joyce.

Bernard O’Reilly advanced on a split decision over Ken Okungbowa in the final contest of the session.

The Championships resume next Friday and Saturday.

Weigh-in times for next Friday and Saturday – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm on both days.

Michael Nevin (gold), Stephen McKenna (silver), James McGivern (silver), John Joyce (bronze) and Willie Donoghue (bronze) finished in podium positions at the European Youth Championships which concluded in Kolobrzeg, Poland today.

Team Ireland finished in second spot in the rankings table and in third spot in the medals table at the 38-nation tournament.

Stephen McKenna and James McGivern had to settle for silver at the European Youth Championships finals in Kolobrzeg, Poland today.

The Monaghan and Belfast duo were adjudged to have lost to Azerbaijan’s Ismayil Huseynov and Germany’s Denis Gashi in the light-fly and light finals.

Huseynov was on the floor three times in the second round – on each occasion it was ruled a slip, as McKenna, who found the target with the majority of cleaner and more solid shots throughout, dominated.

McGiven was involved in a much tighter affair with Gashi. Both boxers had their moments in the first and second round, Gashi landing a good left at the end of the first, but McGivern returning the compliment to sent his opponent crashing back against the ropes in the second.

McGivern also found the target with the majority of punches in the third, but the decision went to the German.

Michael Nevin was crowned European 2015 Youth champion earlier today on walkover after Azerbaijan’s Ismayil Huseynov withdrew with an injury.

Nevin now has the unique distinction of winning European Schoolboy, European Junior and European Youth gold medals – and he’s still underage for Youth boxing next year.

Nevin won four bouts in five days en route to the 69kg final, including a semi-final victory over Russia’s current AIBA World Youth champion Bibert Tumenov.

Stephen McKenna and James McGivern are in action in today’s finals. Both boxers are guaranteed at least silver, while Willie Donoghue and John Joyce will be bringing home bronze.

McKenna, Donoghue and Joyce will bid adieu to their impressive Youth careers this weekend as all three are slated to make their debuts at the Irish Elite Championships over the next two weeks.

Today’s finals bring the curtain down on Ireland’s international campaign for 2015. Our boxers has won medals in every international tournament entered in 2015.
