IRISH BOXERS QUALIFIED FOR THE OLYMPICS

Ireland’s boxers for the Rio 2016 Games have been confirmed.

The first sixty 60 boxers for Rio were confirmed by the International Boxing Association yesterday.

Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward will represent Ireland in the light-fly, bantam, welter and light heavy weights in Rio.

Barnes and Donnelly qualified through the World Series of Boxing and Conlan and Ward through regular amateur boxing, although Conlan also qualified through the WSB.

Irish boxing has nine – three for women and six for men – further Olympic places to aim for in 2016.

Overall,  a further 190 men and 36 women will be confirmed in 2016.

Olympic champion Katie Taylor and Irish women’s boxing will be aiming to qualify in Istanbul, Turkey next April and at the World Championships in Kazakhstan in May.

The Irish male team for the 2016 qualifiers will take shape after the National Elite finals at the National Stadium in Dublin tomorrow night. Ten finals will be decided.
