2025 Safeguarding Workshop Calendar

16 clubs participated in the first online IABA Safeguarding 1 awareness course of 2025, which took place last week: Tredagh BC, Olympic Mullingar, Olympic Galway, St. Nicholas BC, O’Rourkes BC, Dealgan BC, Banna Elite BC,Ballagh BC, Evolution BC, Loughrea BC, Rathnew BC, Mourne All Blacks BC, Ardagh/Crossmalina BC, Ballyhaunis BC, Team Doyle BC and Sacred Heart BC. 

In 2025, IABA is delivering 12 Safeguarding One courses, 4 Safeguarding Two courses and a minimum of 1 Safeguarding Three courses.

IABA is also open, on request, to providing Safeguarding One and/or Safeguarding Two learning in person, at a county board or provincial unit level. County Boards and Provinical Units who wish to commission in-person delivery of this learning are invited to make contact with IABA National Safeguarding Manager, Stephen Flynn, via stephen@iaba.ie

Safeguarding One

All adults – coaches, committee members & non-coaching volunteers – in every club who have contact with children are required to have undertaken Safeguarding 1.

Safeguarding Two

The aim of this workshop is to help the Club Children’s Officer to carry out their role and support the implementation of best practice in the club. Participants will also receive a Club Children’s Officer Action Planning document as part of the training.

Safeguarding Three

A person appointed to the Designated Liaison Person position in a club must firstly complete the Safeguarding One Workshop and should complete the SG3 training. A club may appoint the same person to both the CCO and DLP positions however best practice advises that they are kept as separate roles.

In 2024, IABA delivered 14 Safeguarding 1 basic awareness courses, online and in person, providing this vital learning to 207 coaches and club administrators. IABA also delivered two Safeguarding Two courses to 28 Club Children’s Officers.

Team to contest the 76th Strandja Memorial Tournament named.

An 18 strong team has been named to contest the 76th Strandja Memorial tournament, taking place in Sofia, Bulgaria, from February 22nd to March 3rd.

Team Ireland has won 12 medals at the tournament, half of them gold, since 2020. An average of 30 federations contest, annually.

This team includes members of the High Performance Senior Squad, the High Performance Priority Development Squad and the High Peformance Visiting Athlete Squad. 60kg Adam Hession of Monivea BC, has been named Team Captain.

The Men’s Team will attend a training camp at the tournament base, departing on February 15th. 57kg Gavin Ryan (Ratoath GG, Meath) and 63.5kg Roy Colgan (Avona, Dublin) will fly to Sofia to participate in the camp, only, owing to respecitive other commitments. The Women’s Team will participate in a domestic sparring camp with the Ulster High Performance Team in advance of departure, next week.

National High Performance Head Coach Zauri Antia says “Performances are key. I am looking for the best performances from each boxer, regardless of the outcome of the bout. This is a very exciting opportunity for this team – Strandja is very high standard tournament, the oldest international amateur boxing competition in Europe. Some of the best boxing nations in the world will be there, including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan”

IABA 2025 Coach Education Calendar.

IABA is sharing the 2025 Coach Education Calendar, which includes the provision of 12 Level One: Club Coach courses and 13 Fundamentals Assistant Coach courses

  • Munster will host 2 Level One and 3 Fundamentals courses in 2025
  • Leinster will host 2 Level One and 4 Fundamentals courses in 2025
  • Connacht will host 2 Level One and 3 Fundamentals courses in 2025
  • Dublin will host 2 Level One and 3 Fundamentals courses in 2025
  • Ulster will host 4 Level One and 2 Fundamentals courses in 2025
  • All calendars are subject to change/amendment

IABA is open to commissioning additional Level One and/or Fundamentals courses, as need is identified. These courses can be commissioned by Provincial Councils by contacting IABA Education and Training Officer, Nikki Foley nicola@iaba.ie.

Provincials Councils should note that the ability to fulfill this request rests on: confirmation of Coach Developer availability on the date(s) requested; suitable venue availability on the date(s) requested and confirmation by the commissioning Provincial Council that a minimum of 15 participants are confirmed.

Level One

The Level One qualification includes learning technical skill learning, S&C education, session planning, coaching psychology and additional skill building. Participants will be provided with learning tools, including a coaching manual and log book and short drill video clips.

This qualification is open to any IABA member who has completed a minimum 6 months coaching in their boxing club post completion of the Fundamentals course.

The course takes place over 22 hours, including two full in-person days. The curriculum is:

Fundamentals: Assistant Coach course


This is a full day, in person introduction to coaching which includes:

  • The role of the Coach – Learning on coaching children and Positive Behaviour Management
  • Physical ABCs – agility, balance and co-ordination
  • Technical and Tactical skills – Developing Technical and Tactical skills, the warm-up, stance, guard, footwork, Evasive & Defensive techniques and cool-down

IABA attends all-party Sport & Physical Recreation forum at Stormont.

IABA has participated in a meeting of Northern Ireland’s All Party Group on Sport & Physical Recreation today.

The APG is tasked with ensuring that that sport and physical recreation has a high profile in the NI Assembly, to influence Assembly policy, to liaise with Sport NI, the governing bodies and other organisations in Northern Ireland so that each organisations – in addition, it is responsible for promoting sport and physical recreation which results in improved physical recreation, improved physical and mental health. It is tasked with recognising the value of sport and physical recreation as a tool, that can affect change across marginalised communities and developing cross sectorial working with business, governing bodies, community/voluntary funders, universities and government that promotes, celebrates and collaborates through sport.

The meeting, which took place at Parliament Buildings, Stormont Estate, included SportNI, Disability SportNI, SportED, the Northern Ireland Civil Service Sport Association, the Postcode Lottery and representatives of GAA/ Ulster GAA; Ulster Hockey; Ulster Rugby; NetballNI; NI Horse Board; RYANI
AthleticsNI; Ulster Tennis; NI Fencing; BasketBallNI; Golf Ireland; IFA; Cycling Ulster; NCFFI and
MCUI (UC).

Today’s meeting heard presentations on challenges for disability sport, academic research on the economic and social value of Gaelic Games and matters impacting the introduction of the People’s Postcode Lottery in NI.
