IABA member clubs have voted, unanimously, in favour of a motion to reimburse the legal costs of 25 members arising from a dispute arbitrated by SDSI.
In August 2021, 25 members were removed from the IABA by Central Council. This decision was upheld by an IABA membership committee on 12th November 2021. The certain members successfully appealed through Sports Ireland Arbitration to restore the members. The Arbitrator did not award them their legal costs. At the AGM of the Company in 2023 members made representations to the AGM that they would like this issue re-examined. The Arbitrators did not ultimately award any legal costs to the members on the basis that each party would normally bear its own costs by reference to the principles set out in the SDSI Rules. At the meeting of the Board of Directors on 1 May 2024 it was resolved that this matter would be put to the membership for consideration and their vote on the matter.
55 clubs voted at today’s EGM, and all voted in favour of the motion.
Additionally, an independent investigation will now take place in to the circumstances which brought about the SDSI case. This was proposed by Connacht President, Sean Clancy of Oughterard BC, and seconded by Darren McGavin of Moyle Park.
Chair of the IABA Board of Directors, Niall O’Carroll, says “This is a watershed moment for the Irish Boxing family. We need to be able to speak openly, and challenge one another in appropriate and constructive ways. This is the way forward for us, the way towards a more transparent and governance-focused Association.”
33 2024 National Junior Cadet Championship preliminaries and quarter finals were decided in the National Stadium this today. Boxing resumes at 6pm on Friday, June 7th.

There was a clean sweep of wins for Ireland at the 2nd Olympic Qualifier today – all at the penultimate qualification stage, which means 5 boxers will vie to book their tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday.
54kg Jennifer Lehane was the first boxer in action today, contesting against Ukraine’s Anastasiia Kovalchuk. This was a high tempo, high punch-volume bout which Jennifer controlled from the off, claiming a 5-0 win. Judges scored the bout 30:27; 29:28; 29:28; 29:28; 30:27. She’ll box for qualification against Hungary’s Hanna Lakotar. High Performance Director Tricia Heberle says “Jennifer Lehane boxes beautifully to secure a OG quota bout for tomorrow. Very good tactically against the Ukrainian. One more win Jenny”.
Next up was 92+kg Martin McDonagh, who contested against Bulgaria’s Peter Rumenov Belberov. Martin started as he meant to go on, relying on his accuracy and speed-power, claiming all three rounds and forcing a standing count in the third. He won by UD and will contest for a place in Paris against Armenia’s Davit Chaloyan. Judges scored the bout 30:25; 30:26; 29:27; 29:26; 30:26 – reflecting Belberov’s point deduction. HPD Tricia Heberle says “Martin McDonagh boxes with maturity beyond his years to beat an experienced Bulgarian. 21yrs old and we’re nothing but proud of how he goes about his work. Great prospect.”
50kg Daina Moorehouse contested her second bout of the tournament against Guatemala’s Aylin Jamez. Daina set, and maintained, a high pace, and inflicted high-volume barrages on her opponent. She won every round, resulting in a UD. Judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30. HPD Tricia Heberle says “A dominant display and unanimous victory from Ireland’s 50kg “pocket rocket” Daina Moorehouse. One win away from an Olympic quota spot and will enter the last bout full of confidence.”
71kg Aidan Walsh was the final Ireland boxer in action today. There are 5 quota places available in his, of which four were won on Friday. This prompts a box-off series for the final place. Aidan contested his first box off against Jorge Cuellar of Cuba. Aidan boxed a highly tactical bout from just outside his opponents range, controlling bout from the off. He was the 5-0 winner on a scoreline of 29:28; 29:28; 30:27; 30: 27; 30:27. He’s boxed 6 bouts so far in the tournament, as his weight is the largest, by number. He’ll box his 7th on Sunday, against Puerto Rico’s Angel Gabriel Llanos Perez, in the hope of becoming a double Olympian. HPD Tricia Heberle says “This lad just made a very talented Cuban boxer look like a novice. Aidan is unashamedly unique in how he boxes. He learned from yesterday & contested with purpose & discipline. 5-0, 5-0 in the last two rounds says it all.”
66kg Grainne Walsh yesterday through to the quarter finals, and is a hair’s breadth from qualification, following her dominant victory over Cote d’Ivoire’s Sedja Sanogo – Grainne’s speed, ringcraft and punch-picking shone through in the UD result. She boxes for a place in Paris on Sunday against Armenia’s Ani Hovesepyan.
The team is supported in Bangkok by family, friends and club coaches who’ve travelled there for the tournament:

Ireland recorded two wins from three bouts at the 2nd Olympic Qualifier in Bangkok.
First up was 50kg Daina Moorehouse. Her weight has among the smallest entries in the tournament, and so this was her debut bout. She made no bones about her intentions in her contest with Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan, using her speed-power to devastating affect against her taller opponent. The 4-1 decision, and progression, went to Daina, on a scoreline of 29:28; 28:29; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30. High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle says “Great first up win against a tough Armenian opponent. Such a long wait to fight but came through well”
71kg Aidan Walsh, a Tokyo bronze medalist, was back for his fourth bout of the tournament, following victories over Kenya, Algeria and Ukraine. This was a Paris qualification contest against Jordan’s Zeyad Eashash. Aidan won the first round, but points deductions in 2 and 3 meant the decision could not go in his favour. Eashash has qualified for the Olympic Games following a 4-1 win, on a scoreline of 29:26; 29:26; 27:28; 28:27; 28:27. There are five Paris quota places available in Aidan’s weight, which means there will be a box-offs for the 5th place on Saturday and Sunday. Tricia Heberle, says “Aidan has been in top form all week & his 1st round today was exceptional. This is a tough competition where mistakes get punished. Aidan is absolute quality & he has overcome massive challenges to be here.”
66kg Grainne Walsh has won through to the quarter finals, and is a hair’s breadth from qualification, following her dominant victory over Cote d’Ivoire’s Sedja Sanogo – Grainne’s speed, ringcraft and punch-picking shone through in the UD result. She boxes for a place in Paris on Sunday against Armenia’s Ani Hovesepyan. HPD Tricia Heberle says “A brilliant and dominant performance from Ireland’s no.1 at 66kg. Her opponent from the Ivory Coast gave it everything but it was a Walsh masterclass. One more win for OG qualification. This girl can.”

579 boxers from 133 countries are contesting the tournament. As with the 1st Olympic World Qualifier in March, boxers will contest to quota; meaning, they will cease to box at a qualification bout. There will be no semi-finals or finals, and no medals bestowed. In5 of the weights Ireland is contesting in Bangkok (50kg, 54kg, 66kg, 51kg and 92+kg), 4 Paris quota places are available. In Men’s 71kg, 5 quota places are available, and there are 3 in Men’s 80kg – which means the de-facto bronze medalists will box off for the final quota place in that weight.
Day Nine
