Belfast initiative brings boxing to 250 over 55s.

250 people over the age of 55 have been activated in to sport, and boxing, through an Irish Athletic Boxing Association programme funded by the Public Health Agency in partnership with Belfast City Council.

14 clubs took part in two programmes from July to October; the second was commissioned by Belfast City Council in response to the success of the first phase. Several participating clubs have now included these Over 55s training sessions in their permanent timetable.

The strong level of community involvement in each club highlights how effective boxing can be in promoting wellbeing, participation, and a sense of belonging. Participants in this non-contact programme learned the basics of boxing technique, including stance and form, footwork, bag and pad work, and conditioning exercises.

Participation in boxing can support cardiovascular health, improve muscle and bone strength, enhance balance, reduce stress through physical activity, and foster new social connections.

Liam Corr, IABA Belfast Boxing Development Officer, says “Boxing may be a combat sport, but when you remove the competitive element, it becomes highly adaptable to each individual’s abilities and goals. That makes boxing an ideal choice for people dipping their toe in to sport for the first time, or for those returning to sport and fitness at any age.”

And, Liam adds “This was the first boxing programme of its kind specifically designed for people over 55, and it has surpassed all expectations. I’m delighted that so many of the clubs involved in both phases have now established permanent training groups for those aged 55 and over – and they can do that only as the buy-in from participants was so strong. I’d like to thank the PHA and Belfast City Council for their support of the programme, and each and every one of the clubs for their commitment to it.”

Line-Up Announced: IRL V IND

The return fixture of the Ireland V India Internationals takes place this Saturday at the National Stadium – and the line-up has been announced.

There will be twenty bouts, in all, beginning at 11am.

The first leg, kindly hosted by St. Catherine’s Boxing Club Dublin on November 1st, finished Ireland 12, India 4. Full results are available here

These internationals are the 8th and 9th to take place this year following three Youth Internationals in March involving Wales, France & India, an Elite International against Austria in May, and the U23 Round Robin in Belfast earlier this month which included England, Hungary and an Ulster Select.

This series includes composite Elite and U23 Team Ireland squads, and are a part of the Team Ireland European U23 Championship preparations – which include a 10 week bloc of training at the High Performance Unit on the Sport Ireland Campus, in addition to the 3 day international Round Robin.

IABA partners with Sligo Traveller Support group to mark 16 Days of Activism.

Irish Boxing is partnering with Sligo Traveller Support Group to offer community through boxing to women and girls during 16 Days of Activism later this month.

Beginning on November 25th,  “16 Days of Activism” is an international campaign against gender-based violence that runs annually beginning on the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women and ending on Human Rights Day on December 10th. The world-wide campaign aims to raise awareness, galvanize advocacy, and promote action to end violence against women and girls globally.

IABA is offering free non-contact boxing training sessions in Cranmore, Abbeyquarter Community Centre in Sligo between 11am and 12pm on November 26th & 28th, and December 1st, 3rd, 8th and 10th. These sessions are open to all women and girls who wish to take part.

The sessions will be delivered by IABA Sligo Development Officer, Maeve Clarke, who says “The partnership between IABA and Sligo Traveller Support Group shows the power of sport to unite communities and foster resilience. During the 16 Days of Activism, we’re using boxing to champion safety, strength, and equality for all women and girls. These free, non-contact sessions are about connection, empowerment, and solidarity through sport, and we hope this will become an annual programme.”
