Brian Sutton, Garda Boxing Club, says “An Garda Siochana have a rich and proud history of involvement with the sport of Boxing in Ireland. This history dates back to the formation of the IABA in 1911 when General Eoin O Duffy transferred from the Army to the newly formed Irish Police Service. Following the war of independence, he placed a great importance on the sport of Amateur Boxing within An Garda Siochana. During Commissioner O’Duffy’s tenure the sport of Amateur Boxing in Ireland was largely dominated by the Gardai and Army. Irelands new police force under Commissioner O’Duffy’s guidance helped the sport to emerge from the garrisons to become the working man’s sport, by assisting in the establishment of Boxing clubs throughout the country. Commissioner O’Duffy was somewhat of a visionary, who saw these Boxing clubs as a means of introducing Gardai into local communities.

This work laid the foundation for the enduring relationship between members of An Garda Siochana and Boxing Clubs countrywide which continues to flourish to this very day. This is also evidenced in the GARDA/IABA Community Outreach programme (Hi Garda) this year where members of An Garda Siochana visit and interact with Boxing Clubs nationwide and meet young people where they feel comfortable and built bridges to form stronger, safer and happier communities. The aim of this programme is to act as a vehicle for early intervention, resulting in young people engaging with community Gardai in a positive manner. A strong bond of friendship and respect has been established over many years of collaborative work and engagement between An Garda Siochana and the IABA.”

Members of An Garda Siochana have won national boxing titles and represented Ireland at national and international level. They have also won European and World Police Boxing titles.

Brian Byrne has 6 national titles. Ger Lawlor, Paul Connolly, Willie Cooper, Larry Morrison, Eddie McDonnell and Christina Desmond all won national titles. Adam Nolan has represented Ireland at the 2012 Olympics.

Tickets, priced at €10 for adults and €5 for children under 14, will be available on the door.

The Garda Siochana Boxing club wish to thank Michael Gill and Liffey Crane Hire for their support

Disability Inclusion Training –

This workshop is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and ideas on how to adapt and modify your sport, physical activity or physical education sessions to make them more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities.

Attendees will be engaged through interactive group work, theory content and will be introduced to adaptation tools which will be applied to a variety of games and activities on how to make these inclusive for all ability groups.

On completion of the workshop all participants will receive a Cara Certificate of Attendance endorsed by Sport Ireland, a resource manual and a games booklet full of fun inclusive activities.

Date: Monday, September 26th

Autism in Sport Training

This online workshop will provide attendees with an understanding of Autism focussing on the delivery of sport.

It will help participants to recognise and understand key areas of difference as well as looking at practical strategies which will help to include people with autism in sport sessions.

Date: Wednesday, September 28th

Time: 7pm-9.30pm

Location: Zoom

Book your place here

The training is being made available in recognition of the fact that many boxing clubs are already providing training to boxers with additional needs or would like to begin doing so.

The training is open to Level One coaches, or above, in fully affiliated clubs. Clubs may book one place at each training session.

Cara Sport Inclusion Ireland places a limit on the number of participants at each training session, so book your place early! As places are limited, clubs and coaches are asked only to book if their nominated participant is available on the evening.

Dependent on demand for Disability Inclusion Training and/or Autism in Sport Training, IABA hopes to be able to provide additional training sessions in the coming weeks. This series of training follows on from the provision of Disability Inclusion Training to High Five Boxing Academy Clubs in recent weeks

Save the date: Female Coaching Networking Day.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association, together with Athletics Ireland, Cycling Ireland, Rowing Ireland and Triathlon Ireland are delighted to announce a Networking Day for Female Coaches across these sports.

The Networking Day will be held at a Dublin venue on Sunday 6th November from 10am – 3pm and will be open to all female coaches across Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Rowing and Triathlon. The event will be fully funded through the Women in Sport budget from Sport Ireland and will be completely free for coaches to attend.

The Networking Day has been established off the back of overwhelming feedback from the coaches who have gone through the Women in Sport Coaching Pathway, who have expressed the desire to meet up with other female coaches on a more regular basis.

Further details about the day will be announced in due course, but for now, put the date in your diary and spread the word amongst female coaches!
