7 Team Ireland Boxers in action in the European Schools Championship Today.

7 Team Ireland boxers are in action on Day Two of the European Schools Championship in Ezurum, Turkey.

Boxing begins at midday, Irish time. 50kg Brandon Geoghegan, after his opening day win, meets Poland’s Jackub Marcinow in bout 8 of the afternoon session. Beagan Lochlainn opens his account at 42kg in bout 6 of the evening session, which begins at 4pm, against Italy’s Aramini Massimiliano. Ten bouts later, Team Co-Captain, John (Maher) Donoghue also fights his second bout of the competition, against Ukraine’s Vladislav Zheleznov.

51kg Donna McCarthy takes on Italy’s Filarida Estella in bout 4 of the afternoon session, while 54kg Robyn Carlisle meets home boxer, Ozkan Sila in bout 7 of the same session. Team Co-Captain, Cassie Mae Henderson, contesting at 60kg, takes on England’s Lexi Walker in bout 11. In the first bout of the evening session, 64kg Alannah Kenny meets Moldova’s Xenia Coronciuc

2 Wins for Team Ireland on the Opening Day of the European Schools Championships.

Team Ireland recorded 2 wins on the opening day of the European School’s Championship.

The tournament, for Junior Cadets aged 13 and 14, is being hosted by the Turkish Boxing Federation in Erzurum.

Brandon Geoghegan of Sacred Heart, Dublin, and contesting at 50kg, opened Ireland’s account in Bout 3, with a decisive 5-0 win over Amin Wahbi of Israel. The judges scored the bout: 28:29, 28:29, 28:29, 27:30
27:30.

Bout 4 was the 52kg contest between Cian Stapleton of Marble City BC, and Thomas O’Reilly of Scotland. The decision went to the Scottish boxer, after a valiant performance by the Kilkenny boxer. The final scores: 28:29, 28:29, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30

Team Co-Captain, 57kg John O’Donoghue of Olympic L, took on Israel’s Shrago Shon in his first bout of the competition, and recorded Round 1 RSC to progress. The next bout, at 60kg, saw Portlaoise BC’s Edward Harty, box Topalios Petros of Hungary. It wasn’t to be on this occasion for the Laois boxer, who put in a fine performance. The final scores were: 27:30, 28:29, 28:29, 28:29, 28:29.

Rocco Dempsey, of Avona BC, Dublin, was the final Team Ireland boxer between the ropes on the opening day, and faced Hungarian opposition. This was a close bout, with Dempsey winning the first round and his opponent claiming the second. The 3-2 split decision, ultimately, went to the Hungarian boxer. The scores were: 28:29, 29:28, 28:29, 28:29, 29:28

This is the first time these boxers will represent their country in international competition, although some Junior Cadets will have experienced international competition or training camps through their club, county board or provincial unit.

IABA Extends Thanks To Outgoing Company Secretary, John Nangle.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association wish to thank Company Secretary, John Nangle, for his many years of service.

A Company Secretary’s duties include but are not limited to overseeing the company’s daily administration, ensuring that the company complies with the law and any additional duties that company directors may delegate.

John submitted his resignation to the Board of Directors at its meeting on August 11th. He received an ovation and warm words of thanks for the quality and duration of his service as Company Secretary.

John, who is the IABA’s Chief Financial Officer, will continue in his role as CFO.
