Programmes: 2025 National U17 Championships

Programmes for the opening weekend of boxing in the 2025 National U17 Championship are available.

Over 130 boxers from throughout the Association have entered this competition, for boxers against 15 and 16.

Please note that the finals of the boys 40kg & 44kg divisions, and the girls 46kg, 48kg and 63kg categories will be boxed on Sunday, September 14th.

Venues

Boxing on September 12th, 13th and 14th will take place in Holy Family BC, Drogheda 

Weigh-ins: Friday 8-9am & 12-1pm and Saturday & Sunday 8-9am

Boxing on Friday will begin a 6pm, and there’s an 11am start for boxing on Saturday and Sunday

The Semi Finals & Finals will be boxed at the National Stadium, Dublin, on September 19th and 20th, respectively.

Advisory

  • All coaches must be Qualified and registered via Secretary@iaba.ie by 5pm on Wednesday, September 10th.
  • Boxers may not wear international kit – boxers may wear club kit, only. 
  • The length of the shorts or the skirt must not be shorter than mid-thigh.
  • The withdrawal of any boxer must be notified to the National Registrar Stephen Connolly, phone: 086 1546746 as soon as possible

Walsh joins O’Rourke sisters in World Boxing Championship QFs

Grainne Walsh will join the O’Rourke sisters in the World Boxing Championship finals.

She put on a masterful display in her Last 16 bout against Spain’s Mariana Soto Torres, winning 5-0. Judges scored the bout 29: 28, 30:27, 29:28, 30:27, 30:27.

Grainne will box for a medal against China’s Yang Liu – the Paris silver medalist at the weight. They’ll meet in Wednesday’s Evening Session

Ashbourne’s Jenny Lehane has bowed out of the World Championships at the Last 16 Stage . The 5-0 decision went to 54kg Paris Olympian’s opponent, USA’s Yoseline Perez, the top seed in the weight. Judges scored the bout 26: 30; 27:29, 27: 29, 26:30, 26: 30, following a point deduction for the Irish boxer.

Dublin’s Jack Marley has exited the tournament. Seeded 3rd, the Paris Olympian heavyweight contested his Last 16 bout against Kazakhstan’s Sagyndyk Togambay, ending in a 4-1 decision for the KAZ boxer. Judges scored the bout: 28:29, 27:30, 28:29, 28:29, 29:28

Day Six

Afternoon Session begins at 12pm; Evening Session gets underway at 6pm.

Four Team Ireland boxers are between the ropes on Tuesday. First up is World gold and silver medalist, 70kg Lisa O’Rourke. The Roscommon woman is contesting her quarter final against the top seed in her weight, Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti – a 2025 World Boxing Cup champion. Lisa won her way to this stage of the tournament with a 5-0 win on Sunday over Shirleidis Orozco in a bout which included a point deduction for the Colombian, and a 3rd round standing count. Lisa will be in action in Ring A at around 1pm

55kg Patsy Joyce returns for this second bout of the championships, a Last 16 bout against Javier Ibanez Diaz of Bulgaria. The Cuban-born Bulgarian is 10 years the Westmeath man’s senior. Diaz is a Paris bronze medalist, a European Games & European Championship medalist, and at Youth, was a World and Youth Olympics champion. They pair face-off at around 2.45pm in Ring B.

Also boxing a Last 16 contest is Sligo’s Dean Clancy. The Paris Olympian, contesting at 65kg, meets Georgia’s Lasha Guruli in Ring B at around 8.30pm. Guruli is the Paris Olympics bronze medalist, and a multiple medalist at World and European level.

Offaly’s Brian Kennedy makes his championship debut on Tuesday, having been accorded a first-round bye. He steps between the ropes of Ring A at around 9.45pm against 27 year old Danylo Zhasan of Ukraine

IABA: Voluntary Independent Director

IABA is seeking an Independent Non-Executive Director, to will play a critical role in supporting the effective governance and strategic development of the Association.

As an independent voice, the Independent Director will bring objectivity, specialist expertise, and professional insight to the Board’s decision-making, ensuring compliance with legal duties and alignment with the IABA’s mission, values, and strategic goals. 

The role is voluntary and carried out in accordance with the Companies Act 2014, the IABA Constitution, and the Governance rules of Sport Ireland, and Sport Northern Ireland. 

The IABA is Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport, and is the National Governing Body of Sport for Boxing in the 32 counties of Ireland.  The complete Role Description is below.

Role Description

World Boxing Championship wins for Joyce, O’Rourke & Clancy.

Team Ireland recorded 3 wins from 4 on Day Four of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, and have a second boxer through to the medal stages.

Lisa O’Rourke will join her sister Aoife in the quarter finals. Lisa, from Castlerea, was the 5-0 victor over Shirleidis Oroszco in a bout which included a point deduction for the Colombian, and a 3rd round standing count. Sligo’s Dean Clancy has won his opening bout, recording a stylish, high tempo 5-0 win over Ihlasbek Kochkarov of Turkmenistan. Judges scored the bout: 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30

Dean will contest his last 16 bout against Georgia’s Lasha Guruli in Tuesday’s Evening Session. Guruli is the Paris Olympics bronze medalist, and a multiple medalist at World and European level.

Team Ireland’s Patsy Joyce has won his opening World Boxing Championships bout by unanimous decision. The Westmeath 55kg boxer contested his Last 32 bout against Jaeyong Shin of Korea – and both boxers faced points deductions. Patsy, one of the youngest members of the team, will take on Cuban-born Bulgarian boxer Javier Ibanez Diaz . He’s a Paris bronze medalist, a European Games & European Championship medalist, and at Youth, was a World and Youth Olympics champion. He’s 10 years Patsy’s senior.

Belfast’s Michaela Walsh has bowed out. The 57kg double Olympian lost her Last 16 contest against Shih-Yin Wu of Chinese Taipei, 4-1. Judges scored the bout 27:30; 28:29; 28:29, 28:29, 29:28

540 boxers from 66 federations are contesting these champions, the first in which men and women compete for World gold together. The competition is the biggest ever Olympic-style boxing event held in the UK, and includes 17 medalists from Paris 2024 and more than 30 boxers that competed at the most recent Olympic Games. It features action at 10 weight classes for men and women with 80 medals being handed out, including 20 golds.

Day Five

Three Team Ireland boxers, all of whom are Paris Olympians, are in action as the competition moves to the last 16 stage. Afternoon Session start times have been changed to midday; Evening Session start times remain at 6pm.

First up is Jenny Lehane. The Asbourne woman, contesting at 54kg, returns for her second bout of the tournament having put in an utterly dominant performance in her debut against Poland. On Monday, she takes on USA’s Yoseline Perez, a 2025 World Boxing Cup champion. Jenny will be in action at around 12.45pm.

Heavyweight, Jack Marley, steps between the ropes for the first time at this championship on Monday – he’s seeded third in the weight, and got a bye accordingly. He takes on 2024 Asian champion, Sagyndyk Togambay of Kazakhstan at around 2.30pm

And in the Evening Session, Offaly’s Grainne Walsh returns following her victory over Jessica Triebelova on Friday. Grainne, boxing at 65kg, takes on Mariana Soto Torres of Spain at around 6.15pm
