Team Ireland claim at least 11 medals at World of Havoc Tournament

The draw for the World of Havoc Tournament in Orlando, Florida has taken place – and Team Ireland will come home with a minumum of 11 medals, at least 5 of them gold.

46kg Martin Nevin, Mullingar Shuffler BC, Co. Westmeath, 50kg Sean Kelly, St. Abban’s Kilmyshall ABC, Co Wexford, 75kg John Ward, Monivea Boxing Club, Galway, 80kg Senan Kennedy, Cabra Boxing Club , Dublin and 80+kg William Heaphy Golden Gloves Boxing Club, Cork, 48kg Abby Murray, Muskerry Boxing Club, Co. Cork are all champions and will come home with gold, unopposed. The LOC is making efforts to ensure ring time for all walkover champions.

Sanctioned by USA Boxing, a founder member of World Boxing, World of Havoc is a Tier 1 event. Contesting this tournament was made possible by IABA clubs’ decision in April to also affiliate to World Boxing, on a dual member basis. World Boxing, which will run boxing at the LA28 Olympic Games, affirmed IABA as a member in May.

The team is comprised of 2025 National Senior Cadet Champions in 25 of the 34 weights contested in May’s championships. It includes boxers from 10 counties: Antrim, Cork, Dublin, Donegal, Galway, Laois, Tipperary, Tyrone, Westmeath, Wexford. The Head of Delegation is IABA President Anto Donnelly, while the team will be led by Team Managers National Registrar Stephen Connolly and Central Council member, Anna Moore. The coaches are Liam Cunningham, Saints ABC, Antrim; Valerie Hamilton, St. Francis, Limerick; Paul Simpson, Saviours Crystal, Waterford and Gus Farrell, Monivea BC, Galway

48kg Emmet Shields, Glasnevin Boxing Club, Dublin begins his tournament at Quarter Final stage against Indiana’s De’juane Dycus.

52kg Lee Largey Snodden, Immaculata ABC, Co. Antrim is assued of at least a silver – he’ll contest a straight final against Floridian, Diego Laija

54kg Conan Mc Sorley, Two Castles Olympic BC, Co. Tyrone is the only Team Ireland boxers in action today – he contests against Ethan Fleishman of Florida in one of the tournament’s opening bouts. That’s a preliminary contest. Day one schedule is available here

57kg Kalib Walshe, Wexford CBS Boxing Club opens his account at the tournament against Ariel Rivera at the Quarter Final stage.

Team Co-Captain, 60kg Jason Donohue, Olympic BC Mullingar, Co Westmeath also begins his tournament at Quarter Final stage, taking on California’s Diezyl Stokes.

63kg Lorcan Holohan, Portlaoise Boxing Club, Co. Laois is assured of at least a silver medal – he’s in a straight final against Florida’s Christopher Thigpen.

66kg Darren O’Toole, Jobstown Boxing Club, Dublin will come home with at bronze medal, at minimum. He contests his semi-final against Izaizah Ramirez of Texas.

70kg Martin Sweeney, Galway Boxing Club is a silver medalist, at minimum – he’ll context his straight final against Nicholas Coello of Florida.

46kg Carys Mc Fadden, Dunfanaghy Boxing Club, Co. Donegal has a straight final agaist Sophia Ortis of Florida, and is, at minimum, a silver medalist.

54kg Ella Archbold Ballybrack Boxing Club, Dublin is also assured of at least a silver medal, arising from her straight final against Karma Farber, of Florida.

Boxing celebrates diversity: Regional Workshops open for booking.

IABA’s DEI Officer, Patrick Adejayan, is hosting a series of events celebrating diversity and inclusion within the boxing family. These evenings will share storytelling and lived-experience of boxing club leaders in each province on the D&I journey in their club.

Speakers will include: Gabe Cronnelly, Phil Sutcliffe, Lynda McGrath, Fergus Turner, Nicola Hayden, Paddy Dingle, Stephen Dixon and Shane Curran

Each evening will also explore, through an Irish Centre for Diversity workshop:

  • The facts and myths of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I)
  • What D&I is – and what it isn’t
  • The benefits of D&I in sport generally, and within the IABA specifically
  • How D&I can be embedded at local/provincial levels
  • Potential D&I goals and how these might be achieved
  • How success can be measured – using both short- and long-term metrics, including data on current positioning and future goals

Closing on Friday: entries to the 2025 National U15 & U23 Championships.

Entries are being accepted, via clubs’ Blocworx portals, to two competitions: the 2025 National U15 Championships (boxers born in 2011 and 2012) and the 2025 National U23 Championships (boxers born 2003 and 2006).

The entry period for both championships will run until 5pm on Friday, August 1st. The draws for both will be held on Tuesday, August 5th.

Advisory

  • Both Championships will run simultaneously. The U15s will be in the Main Stadium, the U23s will be in Ringside.
  • All entrants must hold a current up to date Irish passport, with at least 6 months remaining to expiry.
  • No late entries will be accepted. 
  • All coaches must be qualified and registered via Secretary@iaba.ie

Open for booking: August Safeguarding Courses

IABA’s August Safeguarding 1 and 2 courses are now available for booking, following provision of Safeguarding learning online and in person in January, February, March, April, May June and July, attended by over 130 people.

In 2025, IABA is delivering 12 Safeguarding One courses, 4 Safeguarding Two courses and a minimum of 1 Safeguarding Three course.

IABA is also open, on request, to providing Safeguarding One and/or Safeguarding Two learning in person, at a county board or provincial unit level. County Boards and Provinical Units who wish to commission in-person delivery of this learning are invited to make contact with IABA National Safeguarding Manager, Stephen Flynn, via stephen@iaba.ie

Safeguarding One

All adults – coaches, committee members & non-coaching volunteers – in every club who have contact with children are required to have undertaken Safeguarding 1.

In keeping with Sport Ireland best practice in Safeguarding training, workshops will be limited to 16 participants. In keeping with norms across the sporting community, the cost for this workshop is E20.

Safeguarding Two

The aim of this workshop is to help the Club Children’s Officer to carry out their role and support the implementation of best practice in the club. Participants will also receive a Club Children’s Officer Action Planning document as part of the training.

In 2024, IABA delivered 14 Safeguarding 1 basic awareness courses, online and in person, providing this vital learning to 207 coaches and club administrators. IABA also delivered two Safeguarding Two courses to 28 Club Children’s Officers.

Team Ireland depart for World of Havoc tournament.

Team Ireland have today departed for Florida, and the World of Havoc tournament.

The Team Captains are: 65kg Jason Donoghue of Olympic BC, Mullingar and 70kg Cassie Henderson of Phoenix BC, Armagh. Both represented Ireland at the 2024 European Junior Championionships, and Cassie is a 2023 European Schools champion. They’re among 25 boxers selected to represent Ireland at the tournament, in the first event in which Team Ireland has fielded a national team in the US in some years.
