ST FRANCIS TO UNVEIL MURAL TO KEVIN SHEEHY

A mural to Kevin Sheehy will be unveiled in Limerick this weekend.

The late Mr Sheehy died in tragic circumstances in Limerick City on July 1 last.

Thousands attended his service and funeral, including IABA President Dom O’Rourke, former IABA President Pat Ryan, Olympic champion Michael Carruth, IABA CEO Fergal Carruth, IABA National Registrar Stephen Connolly, Andy Lee, IABA officials and boxers past and present.

Ken Moore, head coach with the St Francis unit, and his wife Marian partly commissioned the mural to Kevin after being inspired by a similar representation to Michael Conlan in Conlan’s native Belfast.

Two-time Irish Olympian Conlan dedicated his last victory in the pro ranks to the Irish Senior and Youth champion and Irish international who was 20-years-old when he died.

“We have a brilliant artist behind it and we have agreed on a design already. Kevin’s family, his mum, dad and Emma, were in the process of choosing the artwork with myself and Marion, so everyone has an input in that because that was so important,” Moore told the Limerick Leader.

Moore said the side of St Francis BC, which is undergoing a major renovation, is the “only place” for the mural.

“We decided that was the best place to put it,” added Moore who explained that the decision was taken unanimously by the club’s committee.

The mural will be unveiled to the public at 4 pm tomorrow, Saturday, September 28. All are invited to attend.

The St Francis BC is located in the city centre close to the Milk Market.

IRISH WORLD SQUAD ARRIVE IN SIBERIA

Team Ireland arrived in Ulan-Ude earlier today for the 11th World Women’s Elite Championships.

The draw from the tournament will be held next Wednesday with boxing scheduled to begin 24 hours later at the Sports Complex in the Siberian city.

Circa 67 nations have entered.

The four-strong Irish squad completed a final training camp at the German Olympic Centre in Kienbaum with Germany, Australia and USA on Thursday.

Cavan flyweight Ceire Smith will be lining out at her 4th Worlds on the Mongolian border and Cork welter Christina Desmond and Belfast feather Michaela Walsh in their second and third outings at this level.

Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst impressed on her World debut last year in New Delhi where she was within striking distance of at least bronze and was unlucky to go out to India’s Simranjit Kaur on a split decision in the light-welter class.

Irish female boxing first entered the World Elites at the third edition of the tournament in Podolsk, Russia in 2005.

The two-strong Irish squad of Katie Taylor and Allana Murphy, who met in the first officially IABA sanctioned bout at the National Stadium in Dublin four years earlier, won on their debuts 14 years ago but lost to North Korean lightweight Kang Kum Hui and Norwegian light welter Cecilia Breakhus in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the Irish squad will have their first training session in Siberia today.

Approximately 3,500 miles east of Moscow, Ulan-Ude is seven hours ahead of Ireland.
