UPDATE FROM EUROPEAN GAMES

Armenian bantam Zhirayr Saeqsyan and Georgian super-heavy Mikheil Bakhtidze won their last 32 bouts at the 44-nation European Games in Minsk today to set up last 16 meetings with Kurt Walker and Dean Gardiner on Monday.

Saeqsyan beat Romania’s Eusebiu Jitaru and will meet No. 4 seed Walker on Monday afternoon and Bakhtidze outpointed Islvan Nagu of Hungary en route to his three-rounder with Gardiner.

World Elite lightweight champion Kellie Harrington, the No. 1 seed in the 60kg class in Minsk, will face the winner of Sunday’s meeting between Italy’s former World Youth champion Irma Testa and Moldova’s Christina Rygielska in the quarter-finals next Wednesday with at least bronze up for grabs.

Testa, who will be favourite to advance versus Rygielska, has dropped two decisions to Harrington in the past but the Italian Rio 2016 Olympian did beat France’s Rio 2016 Olympic and World champion Estelle Mossely three years ago.

Kieran Molloy and Michael Nevin will be the first Irish boxers in action tomorrow in Belarus.

IOC OUTLINE ROAD TO TOKYO 2020

The International Olympic Committee Executive Board yesterday confirmed a substantial quota increase for women at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at their Board meeting in Lausanne.

100 female boxers will compete at the 32nd Olympiad, an almost threefold increase from London 2012, where women’s boxing made its Olympic debut, and Rio 2016 which reserved 36 places for women across three weight categories.

186 men will battle it out at Tokyo 2020 across eight categories with male limits reduced from ten to eight and women’s increased from three to five.

286 boxers compete at each Olympiad. The vast majority of these athletes qualify while the host nation is entitled to a number of places.

The Tokyo 2020 qualifiers will run from January to April at host cities to be confirmed in Africa, Americas, Asian/Oceania and Europe with one final qualifier in May.

TOKYO 2020 QUALIFICATION SYSTEM

The proposal includes a revised quota distribution to enhance gender equality, which would increase by 25 per cent the women’s quota previously approved by the IOC Executive Board in June 2017.

The overall quota of 286 athletes is maintained and will be made up of 186 men and 100 women (compared to 250 men and 36 women at Rio 2016).

The continental distribution has been based on participation and results at the past two Olympic Games and two World Championships to reflect the landscape of global boxing.

A total of four continental qualification events will be held (the Asia and Oceania event will be combined), along with a further World Qualification Event. All qualification events will be staged between January and May 2020. The host cities for the qualification events will be targeted/selected from among host countries of recent or upcoming Olympic Games.
